FALL 2003 RESULTS

Weekend of: December 12, 2003 to December 14, 2003

ROLLER HOCKEY

(Roller Hockey Practice December 12, 2003)

We had a tough schedule this weekend playing 3 nationally ranked teams. Having only 2 practices in the past month showed, as we were rusty for the first few games. But as the tournament went on we pulled together to grab a win against Penn State.

Buffalo - 8-2 Loss
R.I.T. - 10-2 Loss
Buffalo - 6-4 Loss
Penn State - 7-6 Win

Our record is currently 3-6-1 with a big second semester coming up. We are looking forward to having Joe Vrablic as our head coach for next semester and possibly Jason Heindorf as his assistant. We will continue to seek a facility to practice at... hopefully we'll find someplace. We clicked well this weekend when we got back in stride... and I believe we will be a force next semester with the guidance of a coach and some added talent.

ICE HOCKEY
On Saturday, December 6, 2003 - Your Binghamton Bearcats skated at the BCC Ice Center against John Carroll University from Cleveland, Ohio. The Bearcats wavered early in the first, going down three goal to none but fought hard to come back. By the end of the first they had scored two goals, one from Sean Marcel and Dave Haase each to make the score 3-2. The last two periods saw the Cats shift momentum to their side as they started to skate stronger and make better decisions with the puck. John Carroll scored one more goal in the second and Binghamton got goals two more goals from Dave Roufaiel and Graham Dimmock. This was Dimmock's first game back from a shoulder separation earlier in the year and he skated extremely well, Roufaiel made a change to forward but despite the new position he played a remarkable game. Binghamton got the game winning goal from Chris Mamrosh in the third period battling back from an initial 3-0 deficit to win the game 5-4. Binghamton travels to Cleveland to play John Carroll next Saturday, December 13.

EQUESTRIAN CLUB
The Equestrian Team closed out their competitive semester finishing 8th at Cornell's IHSA show on Sunday. Some highlights were Jennifer Alongi placing 3rd in her Novice Equitation flat class, and Emily Creo placing second in her Walk Trot Equitation class. The team will compete in four shows next semester, and they expect to have several members compete at the Regional Competition at SUNY Morrisville in April.

SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB
The Club took a full day trip to Penn. State University to take their belt examinations and to receive training from Sensei Okazaki, the nephew of the man who brought Shotokan Karate to America. The belt test results haven't been reported (when the results are reported we will post them). Everyone had a great time, despite the adverse weather conditions going and coming back. We have a holiday fundraiser planned for this Thursday, December 11, 2003 from 11:00AM to 4:00PM in front of the food Court at the New Union!!! (BRING YOUR QUARTERS!!!)

PAST RESULTS:

ICE HOCKEY: Fri Nov 14 saw the Bearcats second home game at the Polar Cap against Mercyhurst College. Most students and fans of the club know the Polar Cap well and Friday night did not disappoint. The Bearcats opened the scoring taking a 1-0 lead in the first but halfway through the second found themselves trailing the number 18 ranked team in the nation 3-1. The Cats weren't out of things yet though and thanks to great fan support, momentum swung their way netting one more goal, 3-2, at the close of the second period. The third period provided some of the most exciting hockey Binghamton University has ever played tying the game at 3 all. However, Binghamton could not hold on and due to penalty and man down situations, saw their hard work slip away as Mercyhurst regained the lead and finished the game 7-4. The Bearcats will see Mercyhurst one more time before the end of the semester and hope to tie the series at a game apiece.

The BCC Ice Center was the venue for the Bearcats second game of the weekend as they faced-off against the University of Rochester. Back to back games proved to be tiresome for the Cats as Rochester pulled out to an impressive 5-0 lead through the first two periods. The boys in green weren't done for the day though as they stuck to their game plan and put in three goals in the third period and started to smell a comeback. Alson McKenna and Tim Levo scored their first goals of the season but their hard work wasn't enough to overcome the lead established earlier in the game. Rochester finished off with and empty net goal in the last minute of the game, bringing the final score to 6-3. The Bearcats have seen marked improvement in their last few games and look forward to turning the season around when they pick things up after the holiday break.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE: Loss vs. Lehigh Alumni (13-15) win vs. Lafayette (15-9) Win vs. Lehigh (15-3) The first game (our only loss) was a disappointing one after we ended the first half with a score of 1-8 (Lehigh Alum up) and we made a strong come back and fight in the second half but just fell short in the end. The weather turned out to be mostly sunny around 45 degrees and a chilly wind but it was nice to play in.

EQUESTRIAN: At SUNY Morrisville on Saturday November 15th, the Binghamton Equestrian team placed 6th out of the 11 competitive other equestrian teams. They received a high of 23 points at the show, with many individual accomplishments as well. Point riders: Dana Rubino placed 6th in her flat class, Sandy Ahearn placed 2nd in her jumping class and 5th in her flat class, Jennifer Alongi placed 1st in her Jumping class, Karen Rabinowicz placed 3rd in her flat class, and Emily Creo 4th in her flat class. The team is looking forward to an overnight trip at their next show at Skidmore College Saturday, November 22nd.

On Saturday, November 8th, the Binghamton University Equestrian team placed 7th out of 11 teams at their first show of the season, at Hartwick College. The team competed against Colgate, Cornell, Cobleskill, Hartwick, Ithaca, Morrisville, RPI, Siena, Skidmore, and a new addition to this year is Hamilton. The beginning of the year has been a huge improvement for the team. The team left the Hartwick show with a pleasing 27 total points, the highest the team has ever obtained. Point riders Dana Rubino placed 2nd and 5th, Kristina Connolly placed 5th, Jennifer Alongi placed 2nd, Rachel Pech placed 2nd, Karen Rabinowicz placed 3rd, Barbara Ehlen placed 3rd, and Sandra Ahearn placed sixth. In addition, the Equestrian team has doubled in size. Many of the new members this year are freshman, and most are involved intercollegiate. Even though some of the new members do not compete; they still express enthusiasm by traveling with their teammates to cheer them on. The team’s next three shows are November 15th at Morrisville, November 22nd at Skidmore, and December 7th at Cornell.

RACQUETBALL: Final tournament champions by division: Men's A - Andy Kear (Court Jester) Men's B - Ryan Levering (BU) Men's C - Lori Biesheuval (Oneonta) Women's B - Carol Morgan (Court Jester) Doubles A/B - John Giglio/Bob Hertzog (Court Jester) Doubles C/D - Ryan Levering/Jeff Schrieber (BU) We had a total of 23 participants, 12 student

OUTDOORS CLUB: Had a great hike in the nature preserve on Saturday. Approximately 10 club members hiked 5 or 6 miles through some of the lesser-known sections of the preserve, for a few hours in the morning.
