FALL 2004 RESULTS

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: November 29, 2004

SHOTOKAN KARATE (Lycoming, PA ~ December 4, 2004) This was a Belt test for all Shotokan Karate participants. It is essentially where each member grades in order to elevate in rank.

Five of our club members attended this grading and all five have passed their test thus, elevating in rank. Additionally, Jack Luk from our club, happened to be the highest ranked individual grading there, out of a group of 200 people or more.

The belt test consists of two separate parts. First is the seminar, which anyone can participate in. The seminar lasts for approximately 1-1 ½ hours. The seminar mimics the warm ups, basic kick-punch combinations and kata (forms) practiced during a normal karate practice. The second half is the actual belt test. The test if broken into three sections; the basics (kicks, punches, etc.), kata (different forms for each belt color), and sparring (also different forms for each belt color). Everyone is grouped based on their belt color and each group goes up to perform each one of the three tests. This actual testing process takes about two hours or more to test all 200 or more people. Afterward, those who graded are notified in a week's time if they passed the exam or not.

RACQUETBALL: With only four players (Jeff Schrieber, Ryan Levering, Julian Ginos and Dan Zilkha) and missing their normal female players, the team still managed to play some excellent racquetball. With Schrieber and Levering playing in their own words, "the best (they've) ever played". The name of the tournament was Red Division and tie-breakers as that was it across the board.

After winning their first matches, due to poor seeding, both Levering and Schrieber still dropped to Men's 1 Reds. There, Eric Devine, a seeded WNEC player knocked out Levering in the second round. Schrieber then proceeded to beat Devine in another close tie-breaker. All burned out, he then lost in the Red finals the next morning in another close game.

Ginos, after losing a close tie-breaker in the first round, met no great challenge in the Men's 2 Red Division, taking first place. Zilkha played some great racquetball even with not the greatest attitude and ended up with a good placement in the Men's 3 Reds. The club is looking forward to next semester as they continue to climb to national status and have plans of heading out west to Nationals. (Other institutions in attendance: Clarkson, Penn. State, RPI, WNEC, Providence, Nichols, Albany Law, SUNY Albany and Bryant.)

ROLLER HOCKEY (Harrisburg, PA ~ December 3-5, 2004) The Bearcats came into their last games of the semester anxious to play some very tough teams. The weekend started against Virginia Tech, which turned out to be a very tight game. The Bearcats were down 1-0 going into the 3rd period, but then their offense came alive. Binghamton went on to gain a 4-2 victory. Next, they faced off against Rutgers. The Bearcats again played a solid defensive game, winning 5-2. Coming into the game versus Buffalo, Binghamton was very confident against their tough rival. Unfortunately, SUNY Buffalo pulled away late in the 3rd period, winning 10-7. The Bearcats are looking forward to a very busy and exciting second semester.
Binghamton 4 - Virginia Tech 2
Binghamton 5 - Rutgers 2 (Ranked 15th nationally)
Binghamton 7 - Buffalo 10 (Ranked 20th nationally)

ICE HOCKEY (Mercyhurst, PA~ December 5, 2004) This was a league game. Mercyhurst is ranked #16th in the nation. Game Report: Binghamton University ended the fall semester by traveling to Erie, PA to play nationally ranked Mercyhurst College. The Bearcats travelled with a short bench but gave it their all. Mercyhurst College defeated the Bearcats of a score of 9-4. Goaltenders Josh Reiger and Adam Leach split the game and faced a combined 60 shots. Reiger made 21 saves while Leach made 30. Frank Scalia, Andrew Beider, Rob Gilbert and Dave Haase scored bearcat goals.
Key Information: This was a league game. Mercyhurst is ranked #16th in the nation.

ICE HOCKEY (Chenango, NY ~ December 3, 2004) The Binghamton Bearcats faced-off against Cornell in an exhibition game. Cornell opened the scoring early, but Binghamton bounced back with a goal from Doug Centola on the power-play. Cornell and the Bearcats would trade goals for the rest of the first period. Centola would score his second of the game to tie the score at 2 once again on the power-play. Cornell would lead 3-2 going into the first intermission. The game saw plenty of whistles and penalties and the Bearcats would once again capitalize on the power-play from Centola's hat trick goal off a nice feed from Dave Haase. The game was tied at 3, until the midway point of the third period when Cornell pulled away, scoring two more goals and ending with a 5-3 victory.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: November 15, 2004

FENCING (Vestal, NY ~ November 21, 2004) The Fencing Club held its "Third Annual Binghamton Bash". ICE HOCKEY (Syracuse, NY ~ November 20, 2004) (League Game) The Binghamton Bearcats traveled to Syracuse to play a key game against the Orangemen in an ECHL match-up. This would also be an emotional game for the Bearcats. It would be senior goaltender Joey Barca's last game as a Bearcat. Barca would not disappoint, as usual. He ended his career at Binghamton in ideal fashion, making 35 saves and posting the shutout. Barca was a key component to the Bearcats, and will be missed. The Bearcats also played well in front of Barca, scoring seven goals and skating to a dominating 7-0 victory. Bearcat goals were scored by Haase (2), Scavone, Centola (2), Roufaiel, and Baranowski. Binghamton picked up two crucial points in the ECHL, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

EQUESTRIAN (Skidmore, NY ~ November 20, 2004) The club finished up the Fall season by traveling to Skidmore College. Without any surprise the club came out on top taking first place in two-(2) categories:
Rachel Pech - 1st in Flat
Barbara Ehlen - 1st in B-WTC
Home team scored 21 pts

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (Syracuse, NY ~ November 20, 2004) The Men's Volleyball Club attended a 23-team tournament that included various college and private clubs. The team went home disappointed on Saturday without making the playoffs. Although they were arguably the second best team in their pool, Binghamton played very hot and cold. They beat one of the better teams right after losing to the worst. The pool was very difficult though, so the club shouldn't be too disappointed. They can play with the best of 'em.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: November 8, 2004

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (Geneseo, NY ~ November 13, 2004) It was a disappointing day for the team on Saturday. With only six people at the gym that day, everyone was on the court at all times. Not only were they battling exhaustion from getting up at 6AM on a Saturday, the setter was unable to attend so the team was crippled from the start. They finished winning only one game in three matches.

Cornell B vs. Binghamton 25-20 18-25

JMV was the next opponent and Binghamton achieved its first victory of the year in a close game, 8-6. On Sunday, Binghamton played Drexel, another very strong team. This was the most competitive game of the weekend as the lead kept switching sides, but Binghamton played a better 3rd period and came out on top. The Bearcats were satisfied with their play this weekend and hope that this was a start to a very successful season. The Bearcats next games will be held the weekend of December 3rd in Harrisburg, PA.

Suffolk 13 - Binghamton 2

ICE HOCKEY (University Heights, OH ~ November 13, 2004) Game two would be a different story for the Bearcats. BU was flying from the opening face-off and opened the scoring. After the first period the Bearcats lead 2-1. The second period consisted of many power play opportunities for the Bearcats and they went ahead 4-1. Later in the period, BU self destructed and gave up the three goal lead, and entered the third period tied at 4. The Bearcats refused to quit and scored first in the third period, and ended up winning 6-5 in a very intense contest. There was great team play and Bill Woerner and Chris Mamrosh showed great individual play. Bearcat goals were scored by John Scavone, Judson Dacher-Shapiro (2), Frank Scalia and Doug Centola (2).

ICE HOCKEY (University Heights, OH ~ November 12, 2004) The Bearcats traveled to Ohio to face off for a two game series with John Carroll University Blue Streaks. The series was hard fought and both sides had short benches. The opening game was a battle right from the start. JCU opened the scoring, but Binghamton bounced back and the tied the score at one, from a flying, diving goal by John Scavone.

JCU would lead 2-1 and not look back. The remainder of the game
consisted of gritty play on both sides, while BU had trouble breaking out of their own end. The Blue Streaks would pull the win out with a 3-1 victory because of an empty net goal. Brian Devennie and goaltender Joey Barca showed great defensive play.

Men's Lacrosse 2004 Ithaca Fall Brawl Champions!

MEN'S LACROSSE
(Ithaca, NY ~ November 7, 2004) The BU Men's Club Lacrosse team traveled to Ithaca on Sunday November 7th to play in the first annual Ithaca Fall Brawl, a double elimination tournament against Colgate, Cornell, Ithaca, and Hobart. The club 'cats advanced to the second round defeating Hobart Club Lax by a score of 9-1. In the second round of play Binghamton faced Colgate and dominated their Empire East Division rivals. The bearcats advanced to the final round of play defeating Colgate 8-3. In the final round Binghamton faced Ithaca, who was no match for the bearcat club lacrosse powerhouse. Once again Binghamton was victorious beating Ithaca 8-2 and securing their first ever Fall Brawl Championship!

The Bearcats played some awesome lacrosse on Sunday outscoring their opponents 26-6. They ended their fall season 5-1 with a championship under their belt, and look forward to the spring where they will have the chance to defend their National Lacrosse Championship title.

ICE HOCKEY (Buffalo, NY ~ November 5, 2004) The Binghamton Bearcats traveled to the Pepsi Arena to play University at Buffalo in an ECHL contest. This game would prove to be a true test because of the success Buffalo has been having this season, including being ranked 17th in the nation. The Bearcats opened the game timidly and allowed a goal within the first 12 seconds of the first period. Binghamton settled into their game of the neutral zone trap and went into the first intermission trailing 2-0. During the second period Doug Centola scored off a rebound to make the score 2-1. Buffalo answered back making the score 3-1. The Bearcats did not fold, and defensemen Frank Scalia scored in front of the net on the power play making the score 3-2. Buffalo once again answered and the score was then 4-2. With very little time remaining in the second period, the Bearcats were given a delayed penalty, and Buffalo simultaneously pulled their goalie. A shot was taken on Joey Barca, which he saved, and Buffalo attempted to pass back to their point man, but with a friendly bounce, the puck went off the boards and into their empty net. It is under consideration if goaltender Joey Barca will be credited with the goal. The Bearcats entered the third only trailing 4-3. The Bearcats played their best in the third only to lose to UB 5-3.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: October 25, 2004

Binghamton 1 vs. Cornell 7
Shoot out: Binghamton 4 vs. Cornell 5

ULTIMATE FRISBEE (Rochester, NY ~ October 30 & 31, 2004) Binghamton went 3-3 for the tournament. The tournament is heavily attended every year, and this year was no different. There were 20 open teams and 15 women's teams, many of whom were dressed in Halloween attire. BBC men had over 20 people there, which allowed us to be well rested, and to play a lot of young people. The men went 3-3 over the course of the tournament, including wins over Ulf R Alumni, Fredonia, and archrival Albany (13-2 slaughter). The team particularly clicked on day, beating a higher-seeded Albany team and nearly defeating 2nd seeded Colgate (the visitors from our home tournament) The Women's team only dressed seven people and faced some very experienced teams in their pool. Their record was not indicative of their play, as they provided great competition throughout the tournament. The women played with a lot of spirit and had by far the most fun out of anyone there. We are optimistic about the future of the women's team; although the club remains a single co-ed unit, we think we can send a women's team to tournaments and be very successful.

COED:
BBC 13 vs. Fredonia 2
BBC 13 vs. U of R Alumni 8
BBC (B team) 8 vs. Case Western 13
BBC 9 vs. U of R 10
BBC 13 vs.. Albany 2
BBC 10 vs. Colgate 13

WOMEN:
BBC 3 vs. Georgetown 13
BBC 0 vs. Case Western 13
BBC 2 vs. Buffalo 13
BBC 0 vs. Syracuse 13
BBC 1 vs. UVM 13

CREW (Saratoga Springs, NY ~ October 30, 2004) With 8 boats representing Binghamton Crew Club and a warm sunny day, the Head of the Fish turned out to be a pleasant day. With 1,000 entries, there was a high level of competition for the BU team. The lightweight men's 4+ consisting of Jackie Grabowski, Mike Mohr, Zach Frone, Matt King, and Kevin Lau; was the highlight of the day with their 3rd place finish.

ICE HOCKEY (Lansing, NY ~ October 30, 2004) The Bearcats were on the road again and traveled to Ithaca College for a league contest. This game meant crucial points in the ECHL standings. The Bearcats opened the scoring in the first period off a shot from John Scavone. The second period was full of penalty killing and sloppy play for the Bearcats. Joey Barca played solid between the pipes and Binghamton closed out the win with a 5-4 victory. Other goals were scored by Dave Haase, Victor Baranowski, Mike Barca and the game winner from Doug Centola.

ICE HOCKEY (Newark, DE ~ October 29, 2004) The Binghamton Bearcats traveled to University of Delaware with a short bench. The Bearcats were thoroughly handled by a very good Delaware team. The score was 9-0 Delaware after two periods. The game was cut short with 1:48 left in the second period after Bearcat forward Dave Roufaiel was accidentally hit in the neck with a stick. He was taken to the hospital but is now doing well and will hopefully return to the team as soon as possible.

Key Information: Delaware is nationally ranked at #20. This was a non
league game. The game was cut short after 2 periods because of a neck
injury to Dave Roufaiel.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: October 18, 2004

WATER POLO (West Point, NY~ October 23 & 24, 2004) We were late to our 1st game on Saturday against West Point due to getting lost on the campus but we played (not too well) and lost. Our 2nd game against University of Rochester was a lot better. They helped us out a lot and showed a lot of class. Our final and 3rd game on Sunday against Cornell was REALLY good. We played very well and kept the score pretty close the whole time. Cornell was giving it their all too (they weren't trying to help us by not playing to their full potential). It was a really great way to end the season.

Scores:
Binghamton - 1, ARMY - 24
Binghamton - 4, U of R - 20
Binghamton - 7, Cornell - 14

CREW (Boston, MA ~ October 23 & 24, 2004) The Binghamton Crew Club traveled to Boston this past weekend to compete in one of the largest headraces in the world. Representing the club, Seniors Lakshmi Sukumaran, Christine Dengel, Anna Gandelman, Donica Nalbert and Sophomore Katie Lowther rowed the women's club 4+ event. Racing against 41 other clubs, the BU 4+ returned in 18th place, a better turnout than last year's 30th place finish.

More than 7,000 athletes from around the world compete in 24 different race events. The race attracts up to 300,000 spectators. The 2004 Olympic Gold Men's team and Silver medal women's team made an appearance as well.

ICE HOCKEY (Chenango, NY ~ October 24, 2004) The Bearcats extended their winning streak to three this weekend when they beat Rutgers University 7-4. The Bearcats opened the first period with very sloppy play and ended the first down 3-2. John Scavone and Dave Haase scored bearcat goals in the first period. Roufaeil.

ICE HOCKEY (Binghamton, NY ~ October 22, 2004) The Binghamton Bearcats traveled to BCC Arena to play their cross-town opponents the Broome Hornets. Judson Dacher-Shapiro, Doug Centola, Dave Haase, Aaron Woolf, Frank Scalia, John Scavone, Mike Barca scored goals and senior Victor Baranowski had a hat trick. Goaltenders Joey Barca and Adam Leetch split time.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: October 11, 2004

WOMEN'S RUGBY (Vestal, NY~ October 16, 2004) The scene of Saturday's game did not reflect the caliber of play that had taken place. The first 30 minutes of the game were very close, with neither team scoring as tries, possession, and position being freely exchanged. The score of the half was 0-5 Cornell.

Binghamton fell apart at the start of the 2nd half, with Cornell scoring a succession of four tries in the first 15 minutes. The team, though, picked themselves up after that major setback and played as competitively as they had in the first half. Despite the poor score of the game the team was happy with their performance during most of the game and conceded to one of the best teams put out by Cornell in the last 5 years.
Final Score: Binghamton - 0, Cornell - 44

RACQUETBALL (Allentown, PA~ October 15 & 16, 2004) This was one of the largest ECRC tournaments to date with participants from 18 different schools. The Binghamton club made a good showing at the first tournament of the season placing 8th out of 20 teams overall. This is quite impressive considering the men's team had only 4 out of a total of 8 allowed players competing for points. Individual ranking are as follows:

Jeff Schreiber: 6th Place Men's 1 Singles (Blue)
Ryan Levering: 5th Place Men's 1 Singles (Blue)
Mike Cohen: 4th Place Men's 2 Singles (Gold)
Dan Zilch: 4th Place Men's 3 Singles (Red)
Holly Mitchell: 3rd Place Women's 1 Singles (Red)

On another impressive note, all the men's double teams made it to the quarterfinals in their respective gold divisions. [Fellow institutions at tournament: Penn. State, Clarkson U., Providence College, WNEC, Bryant College, RPI, Nichols College, Wilkes University.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (Vestal, NY ~ October 16, 2004) The women's club took on the Raiders of Colgate University and handled them very well. Winning 7 to 2.

WOMEN'S RUGBY (Buffalo, NY ~ October 16, 2004) The Binghamton women played their last game of the season before playoffs. The women lost to the number 2 seed, University of Buffalo, 34-5. With much of the back line out of the game the wing consisted of almost entirely rookies under the leadership of fly-half Colleen Henry. The only other veteran back Daranee Inthavong scored the only try by Binghamton. The forwards looked strong throughout the game winning several defensive scrums with a notable 15-meter drive off a scrum. The results of this weekends play secures the team a 4th seed spot in the weekend's upcoming 1st round playoffs. The club will travel up to Ithaca to take on the #1 seed Cornell University.

OUTDOORS CLUB (Endicott, NY ~ October 16, 2004) We went down to Grippen Park in Endicott where we unloaded the canoes. Mike Zuber gave us a refresher course on how to paddle and handle the canoes. We paired off and hopped into the canoes to paddle 8 miles downstream where we got picked up and drove back to Binghamton.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE (Buffalo, NY ~ October 16, 2004) Theodore Seuss Geisel Memorial: Tournament Binghamton's A-team went undefeated in the first day of pool play, while the B-team gained valuable tournament experience. In the cross over game, the A-team lost a tough game to Edinboro and went into the second day with the 5th seed. In the first elimination game, the combined A and B team beat rival Allegheny. In the quarterfinals they lost to an experienced team from U of R, the 4th seed.

"Club Lacrosse splits games in Fall '04 Shoot-Out Tournament"
MEN'S LACROSSE (Vestal, NY ~ October 16, 2004) The Binghamton University Men's Lacrosse Club hosted its Fall '04 Shoot-Out Tournament with Empire-East Division powerhouses Syracuse University, Cortland State, and Binghamton University. Binghamton came out strong in the first game against Syracuse and battled back and forth for the lead, going into the half tied at 5 goals apiece. Syracuse came out shooting in the 3rd quarter and took an 8-5 lead going into the 4th quarter. Binghamton came back strong tying it up at 9-9, sending the game into overtime. In the first overtime Syracuse won the face off and scored on fast break, ending the game at 10-9.

Rookie goalie, Daniel "Rabbi" Krasner, made key saves and set the tone for the rest of the game. He was backed up by a strong defensive game from Vinny Maniscalco, Greg Service, Brian Sanderson, and Mike Pepe. Leading scorers for Binghamton were Ryan Schmonsees and Chinar Desai with 3 goals a piece. Anil Padiyedathu scored 2 goals and Michael Santo added a goal on an EMO.
Cortland took Syracuse in the second game with a strong 14-10 win.

Binghamton vs. Cortland was an all too familiar scene for the Bearcats, coming out slow and entering halftime down 5-3. The Bearcats once again turned the game around in the second half with strong leadership from goalie Dan Krasner and played great team defense. Rookie midfielder Ryan Schmonsees took over the game and scored a season high 5 goals to send the Bearcats into 9-9 overtime at the end of regulation. Schmonsees won the first face off in overtime giving the Bearcats possession. Sophomore midfielder Jon Wong then scored his second goal of the day, handing the Bearcats a 10-9 win over Cortland State. A strong performance was shown by Junior defensive midfielder Mike Pepe who leads the team in groundballs. Goals were scored for the Bearcats by Ryan Schmonsees (5), Anil Padiyedathu (2), Jon Wong (2), and Chinar Desai (1).

ICE HOCKEY (Chenango, NY ~ October 15, 2004) The Binghamton Bearcats picked up their first win of the season last night against the University of Rochester with a score of 3-1. The first period was played tight on both sides, but Binghamton opened the scoring with one minute left in the first period off a shot from sophomore Tom Kitay. After the first, Binghamton did not look back and controlled the rest of the game. The second period saw the Bearcats killing several Rochester power plays with solid goaltending and defense. Senior goaltender Joey Barca played another impressive game making 31 stops. Freshman Judson Dacher-Shapiro made the score 2-0 off a shorthanded breakaway chance midway through the second. Dacher-Shaprio would score again during the third period off a nice feed from Doug Centola making the score 3-0. Rochester would later score off a deflection to finalize the score 3-1. The Bearcats showed solid overall team play with each player contributing to the win.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: October 4, 2004

ROLLER HOCKEY (Feasterville, PA~ October 9 & 10, 2004) For the first time in three-(3) years the Binghamton University Roller Hockey Club had a winning preseason. The Bearcats came into the weekend with a lot of new players. Game one vs. James Madison University was a success as the Bearcats took the early lead and didn't look back. Leading scorers included Mike Coyle and Mike Guerriero. Binghamton ran into problems against the University of Maryland, a very tough opponent. Danny Dikovsky had two-(2) goals and John Cahill contributed two-(2) assists. Everyone got into the action against Brockport, a great victory for the Bearcats. In an attempt to anchor the club for the divisional playoffs, which are to be held the weekend of October 23 and 24 at United States Military Academy. Some more good news came from the weekend tournament, with the club winning its first game ever in Club history. President Keefer of the Club has stated "the team is coming together and as each day passes the club is building a nucleus for the near future." Binghamton has played very well especially for only being in its second year of existence. Binghamton U. beat Columbia University 5 - 0; Colgate U. beat the Bearcats 19 - 1; US Merchant Marine Academy beat BU 17 - 5; US Military Academy beat Binghamton University 26 - 4. The club is going into a two-(2) week practice period in hopes of making some waves come tournament time.

CREW (Rochester, NY~ October 10, 2004) The club traveled to the 16th Annual Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta. This provides our club the opportunity to compete against some of the top crews in the Northeast, i.e. Harvard, Syracuse University, Yale and Brown. The BU women's 4+ placed 16 out of 17 boats. The Men's 4+ came in 13th out of 14. The women's 8+ beat out fellow SUNY teams, i.e. Geneseo and Buffalo as they placed 16th out of 24. The men's 4+ had a slight equipment failure and not all 8 rowers were able to finish the race, they came in 22 out of 22.
Overall, spirits were high as the team was able to not only view but row beside some of the top IVY League institutions. (Teams that attended the race were as follows: Radcliffe, Harvard, Syracuse, Hamilton, Ithaca College, Geneseo, Colgate U., Brockport, William and Smith College, Canisius, Williams College, Cazenovia College, U. of Rochester, Dartmouth College, RIT, Brown, Hobart College, Niagara U., St. Lawrence, and Binghamton University.)

The club traveled up the road to fellow State University Campus of Cortland to take on other New York State Institutions, i.e. Cornell University, Ithaca College, Cortland State A & B squads, Canisius College and RIT. Binghamton played well beating two-(2) squads and splitting the other games during pool play. Binghamton advanced to the semifinals where a heartbreaking dump by the opposing setter put the squad out of championship contention. The club was exhausted going into the last match against the well rested Cortland team, after playing five-(5) matches back-to-back. Even so, the final game score of 26-24 shows that this brand new team has great potential.

During the hike they located a 20 foot waterfall. With the weather perfect, they observed a beautiful waterfall on a great Fal day.

MEN'S RUGBY (Vestal, NY~ October 9, 2004) After a mid-week loss to powerhouse Cornell University, the club hoped to bounce back with a "W". Knowing fair well Syracuse has had Binghamton's number the last couple of years. The Club went out on all cylinders hoping to get a "W", but fell short, losing 41 - 17.

WOMEN'S RUGBY (Vestal, NY~ October 9, 2004) Fresh off there tie with Union College. The BU Club didn't fair so well versus powerhouse Cornell University losing 41 to 3. This loss leaves the Bearcats at 1-1-1 with the Buffalo game playing a major factor in the picture.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE (Alfred, NY~ October 9 & 10, 2004) This past weekend, the 9th and 10th of October, the Binghamton B-team (BBCB) took part in the Farm Land Fling Tournament, hosted by Alfred University. We brought a total of 14 people, most of whom were new to the game or had only a small amount of playing experience. The team finished 2-3 overall, but showed many signs of promise. The competition ranged widely, from experienced teams to those that were in situations similar to ours.

On Saturday, we began the day slowly, ending the first half in a 7-1 hole to Houghton. We made a huge charge in the 2nd half, getting as close as 12-9 before we were mercilessly time capped to end it. After that disappointing loss, we came out flying in our second game and took care of Adelphi, 13-9. We only had one more game after that due to two teams not showing up, and we beat Alfred 13-10 due to a strong zone defense. This day was windy and fairly cold, conditions, which probably hurt us in the first game but gave us an advantage throughout the rest of the day.

Sunday featured more of the same weather-wise, except colder and grayer. Our first game was a disappointment, as we played a very experienced Geneseo team that beat us soundly, 13-0. This eliminated BBCB from the top bracket, but we still got to play a spirited and intense game with Alfred, who ended up beating us 13-7. We played well despite the scores; these were experienced teams and ours was just getting started playing together. Our freshmen were phenomenal, and it was clear that their play was improving game by game. The BBC women were particularly strong, often playing against teams that did not have any women, and the whole team was impressed with their hard and spirited play. It was overall a fantastic weekend, and any discouragement we might have felt about our record was overwhelmed by hard play and never-say-die attitudes. The team is looking forward to the two most-anticipated tournaments of the year: Buffalo and Danse Macabre (RIT's annual Halloween festival). These are coming in the next two weeks, and both teams will be in attendance, fresh off a weekend that gives us even more optimism.

ICE HOCKEY (Binghamton, NY~ October 9, 2004) BU Bearcats faced-off against pre-season ranked #18 in the nation Mercyhurst College. Mercyhurst handled the Bearcats skating to a 14-3 victory. Mercyhurst controlled all three periods. Senior goaltender Joey Barca continued his outstanding play, making 41 saves on 49 shots in only two periods. He was replaced by senior Josh Reiger who showed a solid effort. All freshman- Judson Dacher-Shapiro, Doug Centola, and Rob Gilbert scored bearcat goals.

ICE HOCKEY (Syracuse, NY~ October 8, 2004) The Binghamton Bearcats traveled north to play the Syracuse University Orangemen. After several pregame difficulties, the Bearcats skated to an 8-1 loss. The Orangemen had a 3-0 lead after the first period. The second period the score was blown open and the Bearcats trailed 5-0 going into the third. Overall, poor team play, and poor team defense gave senior goaltender Joey Barca little help, and he was pulled after the second period despite giving his all, he was replaced by junior Adam Leach. The shutout was broken by freshman Doug Centolla midway through the third, but Syracuse continued their dominance scoring three- (3) more goals in the third period and skating to victory.

MEN'S RUGBY (Vestal, NY~ October 6, 2004) A mid-week match featuring Cornell University and Binghamton didn't go as planned for the BU Club. The Bearcats were hoping to grab a victory over the Big Red of Cornell University. Playing together and with a lot of heart, the club came up short losing 31-5.

WOMEN'S RUGBY (Schenectady, NY~ October 5, 2004) The club traveled two hours downstate to take on league rival Union College. Three-(3) rookies made their A-side debut, Tiffany Chew, Selina Baschreva and Natalia Casino. The team struggled to come together for the late day game and managed to come together with rookies and players in new positions. This game should serve the club as a great warm-up for league rival Cornell University. Final score visiting Binghamton University 12 and Union College 12. The game was called due to darkness. Next game Saturday, October 9, 2004 on University Field #11.

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: September 27, 2004

CYCLING CLUB (Mount Snow, VT ~ October 3, 2004) The club headed up to Vermont Saturday night and found a nice ski-lodge resort to stay in the night. Woke up early to ride all day Sunday at Mount Snow. Our first few rides up the lift were bitterly cold - but it warmed up as the day went on. The trails were very technical and somewhat wet and leaf covered. Which provided an extra challenge for the Club. While there were a few spills ~ there were no major crashes of or bike problems. The club cannot wait until they race next in Reading, PA. This will be the first downhill race of the year.

RUNNING CLUB (Endwell, NY ~ October 2, 2004) The Running Club attended the 5k Race "Octoberfast". Three-(3) members of the club came out 1, 2, 3. Asad Mohammad placed 3rd overall, Meggan Taylor place 2nd overall and Anna Robak placed 1st female in a group 18 to 24. The club is off to its best start in years.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (Buffalo, NY ~ October 2, 2004) The club started the game with a strong offensive push. But Buffalo had home field advantage with the crowd playing a heavy factor. Binghamton lost the lead in the end of the first half after half time the Binghamton Club came out strong regaining the lead. Wet conditions with some rain made for tough play. Buffalo ended up winning 3 to 2. Goals for Binghamton were scored by Davina Chesterson and Kate White on a Penatly Kick. The club looks to pick up on the strong end this Saturday during Homecoming weekend with a 3 - team mini-tournament featuring clubs from Syracuse University and Ithaca College.

WOMEN'S RUGBY (Vestal, NY ~ October 2, 2004) The club started off the season with a good kick-off, winning heavily over Ithaca College 31 to 5. The team seems to have come together well for the start, with an especially strong wing. All of the starting players have returned from last semester and there are serveral new talented players who should appear in the coming weeks as starters. The club looks to continue its streak with a game on Tuesday, October 5 at Union College.

FENCING (State Park, PA~ October 2 & 3, 2004) The Fencing club traveld to State College for the annual Penn. State USFA Tournament which featured men's & women's divisions including junior & open. Three -(3) of BU's finest fencers come out with great records. Club President Kara Lopata finished 8th place in the Women's Open Epee, Justin English finished in the top 15 in the Men's Junior saber and Eric Pho finished 6th place in the Men's Open Epee while coaching the club.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE (Edinboro, PA~ October 2 & 3, 2004) The club played in the E pool of the 25 - team Skylander 4 Tournament held at Edinboro University. Binghamton U. went 5-0 on day one, defeating teams such as Alfred, Geneseo and Indiana University(PA). Teams scored a total of 18 points on us during Saturday's play (compared to our 65). We weren't in a strong pool , however, and our seed on Sunday was not as high as we would have liked. We drew a tough RIT club in the first game, which took place during heavy fog. We broke out of our early-morning haze quickly, jumping to an early lead and holding on for a 12 to 11 win. We then drew Buffalo, a team that we had beaten soundly at our home tournament. They were much less undermanned this time, though, and what followed was an epic game. Due to the time cap, we were forced to play "next point wins" when we were tied at 14 and we lost a heartbreaker in the building wind. We left Edinboro tired and sore, but with a lot of optimism for the weeks to come. Club President quoted as saying: "6-1 is not bad for a club featuring eight-(8) freshmen".

ICE HOCKEY (Slippery Rock, PA~ October 2, 2004) Slippery Rock is new to the league this year. Binghamton ice hockey faced off against Slippery Rock University today. After a seven-hour bus trip, which included hitting a deer, Binghamton jumped out to an early lead off a goal from freshman Frank Scalia. Slippery Rock tied it at one and gained a 2-1 lead after one period. The second period saw the Bearcats penalty killing for most of the period. Slippery Rock increased their lead with a power play goal but the Bearcats answered back with a shorthanded effort from senior Ryan Lalonde. The period would end in a 3-3 tie with a goal scored by freshman John Scavone. Slippery Rock would dominate the third period. Slippery Rock scored three unanswered goals in the third due to the Bearcat's poor team defense. Senior goaltender Joey Barca played another superb game making 34 saves. (FINAL SCORE: Slippery Rock University 6 - Binghamton University 3)

"Club 'cats pick up first win in lacrosse home opener"

MEN'S LACROSSE (Vestal, NY ~ October 2, 2004)The Binghamton University Men's Lacrosse Club hosted the Hornets of Broome Community College Saturday October 2nd and won their home opener 9-8. What started off as an all too familiar rocky start for the bearcats ended with a come from behind win in the 4th quarter.

The Bearcat defense came out strong in the first two quarters, but could not stop the Hornets from taking the lead. At the half, it was BCC 6 and BU 4. The bearcats are used to the pressure of having to come from behind. Just last semester they overcame a 4goal deficit to advance to the NCLL finals and again in the championship game overcame another deficit to win the championship. Today, it was much of the same, a "second half team" playing hard, scoring, and doing what they do best, win. Sophomore Rookie Ryan Schmonsees won almost every face off in the fourth quarter and worked with Attackmen Mark Sweeney, Anil Padiyedathu, and James Savich to net an impressive 5 fourth quarter goals to win the game. The club 'cats are looking forward to their home tournament on October 16th where they will host NCLL powerhouse Syracuse and Cortland State at 10:00 am, East Gym Field #9.

ICE HOCKEY (Chenango, NY ~ October 1, 2004) This was a league game. Niagara is an honorable mention of last season. They continually rank at the top of the league each season. The Binghamton Bearcats Club Ice Hockey team played the Niagara University Club Ice Hockey team last night at the Polar Cap. At the end of the first period the teams were knotted at one a piece. Due to a sloppy second period the Bearcats were out shot heavily which led to three Niagara University goals. In the third period, the Bearcats trailing five to one, Rober Gilbert intercepted a pass and scored a shorthanded goal to make the score five to two. The rest of the third period was dominated by the Bearcat attack. It is important to note that new players, one that is a transfer and the other a freshman, scored two Bearcat goals. Their names are Tom Kitay (sophomore) and Robert Gilbert (freshman). (FINAL SCORE: Binghamton University 2 - Niagara University 5)

RESULTS FROM THE WEEK OF: September 20, 2004

Institutions that attended the tournament were as follows: Cornell beat BU 15 to 5, SUNY GENESEO beat BU 22 to 7, U. Of Rochester beat BU 20 to 4, and RIT beat BU 12 to 1. "Karl Mellander Memorial Ultimate Frisbee Tournament"

ULTIMATE FRISBEE (Vestal, NY~ September 25 - 26, 2004) Fifteen teams came out to the East Gym fields on September 25 and 26 to play in the first annual Karl Mellander Memorial Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, held this year to recognize the extraordinary age of the Ultimate Frisbee Club's president. These teams were primarily college teams, with three club teams in the mix as well. Some great spirited play, minor injuries, and a surprise winner made it an extremely interesting weekend on the BU campus.

The first day started out with a quick captains' meeting and games got underway pretty much immediately. Teams played a total of four games on Saturday, all within their five-team pool. Particularly exciting games included an 11-9 victory by Lafayette over Albany and the Albany Masters' 14-12 win over Colgate. Binghamton's A team (BBC A) played in a pool with Skidmore, Ithaca A, Hamilton, and Scranton, and came out with a predictable 2-2 record after the first day of play. The BBC B team (Binghamton B) did not fare as well but played above their lack of experience in a 0-4 day. The teams with the best records at the end of the day did not come back for Sunday, as Skidmore and the Albany Masters Team went 4-0 but had other things to do on the weekend.) Hamilton also ended up leaving, presumably due to their crushing defeat at the hands of BBC A.) That left Colgate, Ithaca A, Albany, and Buffalo as the top seeds at 3-1 going into Sunday.

This second day featured two brackets of single-elimination play. The winners' bracket had 8 teams: Ithaca, Albany, Buffalo, Lehigh, Buffalo, Lafayette, BBC A, and Georgia. BBC B, Ithaca B, Scranton, and RIT rounded out the bottom 4, and played in a separate bracket, in which our B team took home its first win of the weekend over Ithaca B. The winners' bracket saw BBC A lose a tough one to Albany in the first game, knocking them out of championship contention. They rebounded, though, to take the next two games and finish in 5th place overall. Ithaca A and Colgate played some tough games en route to the final, an epic battle featuring some great long throws and tough defense. Colgate came out on top in the end, 15-11, to take home all the marbles.

Overall, the tournament was a huge success, with a great turnout and some fantastic, spirited play. Both BBC teams took some huge steps forward in their first tournament of the year, getting valuable playing time and learning a lot. We hope that the "First Annual" part of the tournament name will not be a misnomer and that we will continue to host as many teams in the coming years. [PICTURES FROM THE TOURNAMENT]
