Outdoors Camping Trip@ Bowman
Lake State Park
|
| Camping at Bowman Lake
State Park (We left at about 3:00pm on Friday and we were back around
11:00am on Saturday.) - As soon as we got there, we set up the tent
and started a fire. It was still light out, but we were all starving,
and we brought plenty of food to have a feast (a benefit of car camping-not
having to limit it to what you can carry). We spent the night (five
of us total) sitting around the fire, eating, playing guitar, eating,
talking, and eating (we all brought some food, so it ended up like
a mini potluck). Even though the forecast was for rain, we didn't
see more than occasional showers. This little trip, though short,
was a really great way to end the spring semester. |

Outdoors Club Trip to Marcy Dam
@ Adirondack Mtns.
|
When we first got there,
we took our stuff through about 2 miles of trails till we got to the
Dam. We set up camp at a nearby lean-to. The next day, we headed up
to the summit of Phelps Mountain where we got to eat lunch on a rock
with a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. The next day,
we headed up to Indian Falls, cautiously walking along paths surrounded
by up to 10 feet of snow or more. Again we ate lunch on a rock with
a spectacular view. This time, the rock was adjacent to, and part
of, the rock making up the water fall. At the end of the trip, as
tired as we all were, none of us wanted to leave. Since there was
too much snow still left, we vowed to tackle Mt. Marcy in September.

Water Polo Tournament vs. Various
Colleges/Universities@ University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN)
|
|
Over the weekend of April 12th, Binghamton Water
Polo traveled south to Knoxville, Tennessee, for the 15th annual
University of Tennessee Dogwood Invitational.
The tournament, well known as being the best held scrimmage on the
entire East Coast, matched up BU Polo with fellow long distance
travelers, the University of Washington Huskies, as well as the
University of South Carolina, and a post-graduate club team "The
Dynamo" from Atlanta, Georgia.
Along with a weekend of much appreciated fun in
the sun during this competition, held within Tennessee outdoor pool
facility, the Bearcats saw goals from Nicholas Drohan, Ari Krauss,
and Michael Ryan.
While not netting a single victory in three tries
over the weekend, the UT Dogwood Invitational served its purpose
as a means of further developing the Bearcats young talent for the
future, while giving former vice president Lindsay Burleson, former
treasurer Maddy Micu, and former president David Bohr, a well deserved,
and enjoyable, send off in what was inevitably their final tournament
as undergraduate Bearcats. BU Polo will greatly miss these three,
and all that they had done for the betterment and survival of the
club.
Upon returning to Binghamton, BU Polo will hold
on to the memories which Knoxville, Tennessee supplied them with,
and look towards answering some of the questions which will be present
on next year's roster. The team will have to work to fill two voids
which will be left behind by the graduation of David Bohr, and the
dual degree program loss of Turkish goalie, Deniz Pehvilan. David
Bohr, who excelled at the 2-meter position, one of the toughest
positions in the sport, was a pivotal part of the Bearcat offense
over his four years in Binghamton; while Deniz Pehvilan's stellar
goal play earned him the unanimous distinct as the team's Rookie
of the year. Deniz will return to Binghamton University for the
2010-2011 season, but his absence form next year's team will leave
the Bearcats for the second year in a row scrambling to find themselves
a solid keeper.

13-1 win against Clarkson University followed by a very close 9-8
win against SUNY Albany. After playing hard against their first two
opponents, the team's fatigue became apparent as they lost their next
game 9-11 against SUNY Oneonta. The team finished the tournament with
a loss to eventual fourth place finisher Queens-Kingston from Ontario,
Canada.

Club Water Polo R.P.I. Invitational Recap: After
an inauspicious beginning at the 11th Annual R.P.I. Invitational,
BU Water Polo adapted in the face of adversity to put forth a valiant
effort in Troy, NY.
Over the weekend of April 5th, the Bearcats squared
off against Rochester Polytechnic Institute and Coast Guard Academy
twice each. The match-up proved to be as even as they appeared to
be on paper, as the weekend ended off in a 2-2 spilt of the four
competitions our club took part in.
After starting the weekend off with a rather sloppy
performance against R.P.I, losing 7-4 as a result, BU got the chance
to redeem its self from the bitter taste of defeat against its New
York Division Rival in a rematch to commence tournament play. In
the rematch, senior Nicholas Drohan led the offensive attack with
five goals en route to a 9-4 victory over an R.P.I. squad which
was sporting a significantly larger roster. The spilt of the R.P.I.
match-ups placed both teams in a 2-2 tie over the four times the
rivals met up between New York Division play and tournament competition,
and both clubs look forward to a future of hard fought struggles
and continued excellence.
The weekend was highlighted by a 9-2 trashing of
Coast Guard B. Over the course of the match-up juniors, Tina Billingiere
and Pete Dzuik, scored there first goals ever in tournament competition,
and rookie goalie, Deniz Pehvilan continued to shine between the
pipes.
This weekend upcoming, [April 11-April13] BU Water Polo will be
heading south to the University of Tennessee, for the UT Dogwood
Invitational. Hyped as the best water polo tournament the East Coast
has to offer, The Bearcats look forward to the outdoor tournament
and a weekend full of fun, sun, and polo.

Men's Rugby Tournament vs. Various
Colleges/UniversitiesFort Drum, NY
|
| The SUNY Binghamton Men's
Rugby Club had a very successful opening to the Spring 2008 season.
The a-side opened up the tournament with an intense match against
the Cortland men's club. After scoring a try to tie the game up in
the closing minutes, Binghamton came through with a score in sudden
death to take the first game. The next match against the host Barracks
Rangers was just as competitive with both teams seeking a berth in
the championship. Unfortunately, the match did not go Binghamton's
way, and they fell to the Rangers by a final of 15-12. In the third
place match, Binghamton A faced a fit, fast, and deep Ithaca College
team. With both teams playing their hearts out in a match that went
down to the wire, Binghamton won out by the final of 12-10. The Binghamton
B-siders didn't fare so well. In their first match, they faced a determined
and disciplined Hamilton team who used their superior size to win
out. In their second match, Binghamton B faced an equally tough St.
Lawrence team. Although they matured and came together well during
the match, the B-siders couldn't hold back St. Lawrence enough to
win. In their final match against the Barracks Rangers B team, Binghamton
B was able to get some real offense going, netting a couple of tries.
Unfortunately, in spite of the competitiveness of the match, the B-siders
weren't able to walk away from the tournament with a victory. However,
the B side was awarded by the hosting Rangers for their positive spirit
in giving the B side a match at the end of the day with the runners
up in the Collegiate Division. The A side took home the third place
trophy in the Men's Division. In all, lots of rugby was plaid and
lots of fun was had on a day that showed mix success but equal effort
from everyone. |

Ice Hockey vs. St. Bonaventure,
Home, Vestal Ice Rink (Vestal, NY)
|
| The Bearcats had their last
home game of the season against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. The players
came out playing their best as both teams were fighting for a spot
in the playoffs. It didn't take too long for the scoring to begin.
While on the power play, senior Doug Centola deflected the puck into
the net off of a great shot by power defensemen, Eddie Barrett. Later
in the first period, BU added another tally from Jon True as he crashed
the net to bang home the rebound. In the second period, the Bearcats
hit a rough spot and the Bonnies tied the game up at two a piece.
However, Binghamton answered right back with two quick goals from
Joe Livsey. As the game winded down, both teams started playing physical.
Quite a number of brawls between the teams occurred. Binghamton's
Mikey Greenberg stood up for his teammates and got a few clean punches
in on a St. Bonnies forward in front of the net. The BU Bearcats went
on to win by a score of 4-2. |

@ SUNY Cortland (Cortland, NY)
|
| BU traveled to Cortland
for its matinee game this past Sunday afternoon. It seemed as if the
Bearcat players came out with cement in all their skates. Binghamton
had a rough first and second period as the Cortland Red Dragons came
out skating fast and playing physical. Cortland started off the scoring.
Not too long after, defensemen Jon True scored from the point off
of a sweet slap shot. Howie Rotchford and Petey Hilliger got the assists.
Goalie Dave Kanter played a beautiful game and kept the game close.
Unfortunately, by the time BU started playing well, it was too late
as the Red Dragons won the game by a score of 6-2. Doug Centola got
the other goal for the Bearcats. |

|
|
BU Defeats Cortland: Fighting for
a spot in the playoffs, the Bearcats defeat Cortland by a score
of 3-2. Senior all-star, Judson Dacher-Shapiro, started off the
scoring by rifling a shot off the cross-bar and in during the first
period. Cortland would tie the game a few minutes later. During
the second period, sophomore Peter Hilliger found the back of the
net after a nice, no look pass by Howie Rotchford. After battling
for a while, Cortland scored to tie the game again with nearly ten
minutes to spare in the game. However, the tie wouldn't last for
long. Peter Hilliger added his game winning, second goal of the
night from an amazing back door pass by Doug Centola on the power
play. Freshman goalie, Dave Kanter, provided the team with multiple
last minute saves to keep the win for the BU ice hockey club.

Ice Hockey vs. Ithaca College (Away),
Ithca College (Ithaca, NY)
|
Late loss to Ithaca: BU traveled to Ithaca Saturday
night for its second league game of the weekend. Binghamton started
off strong in the first period, roaring for a win. A few shifts
into the game, speedy Peter Hilliger blew past a few defenders
to find Howie Rotchford cutting to the net giving the Bearcats
the lead. Judson Dacher-Shapiro kept his multiple game goal scoring
streak alive with another goal for the team. Joe Livsey added
one more to give BU a 3-1 lead going into the second period. Midway
through the second, the Bearcats had some unfortunate bad luck
as Ithaca scored three goals to take a 4-3 lead. Sam Slotoroff
helped keep the Bearcats alive by getting into a quick scuffle
with an Ithaca forward. It only took a few minutes later for the
Joe Livsey to add a shorthanded goal from a behind the back pass
my Doug Centola. However, as the game was looking like it would
go into overtime, Ithaca scored with 35 seconds left to earn the
win. Binghamton's next game is Wednesday, February 6th against
rival, BCC.

Lake State Park |
| This was definitely one
of the colder Outdoors Club trips. Once we got a good fire going,
and got some water boiling, we were able to warm ourselves up. We
ate a feast of spaghetti and other food, which also ended up as our
breakfast. The snowfall progressed throughout the night. In the morning,
everything was covered in about two inches of snow, including the
tent. Despite some setbacks, the trip ended-up being really enjoyable. |

At the first tournament with both A and B teams
in participation, the women's teams played very well. The B team
had a difficult pool that included Albany and UMass, with impressive
play against each. The A team won first in their pool, defeating
teams like UPENN and Drexel. In bracket play, the A team lost in
the first round against Rutgers. It was a good way for both teams
to gain more experience.

Field Hockey Tournament @ Ithaca,
NY |
| Buffalo didn't want to
hand over the trophy, so Binghamton University club field hockey juniors
Melissa Cuan and Nicole Keane walked right over to the table and took
it.
Binghamton had just repeated as New York State
Field Hockey League champions Saturday, with a 3-0 win over Buffalo
in a rematch of last year's championship match. But tensions escalated
at the end of the match, and an awards presentation ceremony never
took place.
Binghamton (7-0), the top seed in the seven-team
tournament, held a 2-0 lead over third-seeded Buffalo (6-2) with
about four minutes remaining in regulation when things got chippy.
BU midfielder Dominic Young, the lone boy on the team, had an exchange
with a Buffalo midfielder- the two had played a very physical second
half. Binghamton increased its lead to 3-0 with two minutes before
the game ended.
It's something the Bearcats have noticed around
the league: when you get this good this quickly, your opponents
are not going to be too happy."I think it's really established
us as a team," said Keane of another championship run. "Going
into this tournament, other people on other teams thought we were
going to win, and they said that out loud. We went from not even
making the playoffs to winning a championship the following year
and then defending it this year."
Binghamton has lost just one game over the last
two seasons, winning the league title last year, 2-1 over Buffalo.
The Bearcats also defeated Buffalo 4-1 during this year's regular
season.
"I'm just really proud that we were able to
pull together, returning players and incoming players, to be a cohesive
unit," Cuan said.
In Saturday's finals match, Binghamton jumped out
to 1-0 lead on an Anna Greene's goal from the right side eight minutes
in. BU extended its lead at the start of the second half on freshman
forward Mary Buschor's first goal of the game, off a corner. After
a scramble in front of the goal coming off a corner, freshman forward
Jane Donatich took a shot off that deflected to Buschor.
Earlier in the day, Binghamton defeated Cornell,
3-1, in the semifinal to advance to the finals. Buschor, Young and
freshman forward Katie Everett scored for the Bearcats.

for one particular member who greatly enjoys the activity, and is
leaving at the end of this semester. |

Owego
survival training/Camping trip at Chenango Valley State Park (We arrived
in Owego at about 12:00pm on Saturday afternoon, and we returned to
Binghamton at about 1:00pm on Sunday.)- During the afternoon on Saturday,
we were invited to attend a "Wilderness Way" survival course
in Owego. After a brief introduction, the survival expert showed us
how to make cordage and let us all give it a try. He showed us a well-built
survival shelter in the woods made by some of his students, and then
brought us back down to show us some firebuilding skills. After trying
to make a fire with the bowdrill method, he brought out his giant
bowdrill set. It took all of us to operate, and it showed us how to
work as a team. We then spent the night camping in Chenango Valley
State Park. Although we learned how, we still set up tents and used
a lighter to start the fire. It was a cold night, but luckily we were
able to re-start our fire in the morning to boil water for hot c!
hocolate and tea. All of us had a great time, and we can't wait to
test our newly learned skills on a future camping trip. |

Ice Hockey vs. SUNY Oswego
@ SUNY Oswego (NY) |
| 5-2 L: The Bearcats faced
off against another tough opponent this weekend in the Oswego Lakers.
It was a very tough contest as the teams were deadlocked at zero until
the Lakers scored 3 quick goals midway thru the second period. However,
the Bearcats would make good use of the power play in the third period.
Peter Hilliger would score off a give and go play between Jon True
and Judson Dacher-Shapiro. Shortly after the Bearcats utilized the
same play to set-up Doug Centola with a goal. After the Lakers goalie
stood on his head making 38 saves throughout the game the Lakers would
add a late goal to seal the contest. |

Water Polo
@ New York Division Championships @ Colgate University (Hamilton,
NY) |
|
BU Water polo travelled to Hamilton, NY for the
CWPA's New York Divisional Championship Tournament hosted by Colgate
University. Entering this tournament as the ninth seed of eleven
teams to compete this year, the Bearcats looked to show that they
were indeed deserving of the higher placement they came into the
season expecting.
The team entered the 2007 looking to figure out
the answers to questions created by offseason losses and come season's
end had found them. The main concern for the Bearcats was "who
will be our new goalie?" and after tinkering with multiple
options, rookie Deniz Pehlivan became the unanimous choice due to
his stellar play between the pipes.
In what was the decisive game of the Bearcats season,
a match-up which paired them against R.P.I. - a team with similar
attributes and skill levels - Pehlivan's play in net was the difference
maker. Earlier this season R.P.I. and B.U. faced off, with former
club member Daniel Lewis in net, and the final score was a 13-11
loss. With the insertion of Pehlivan at keeper, BU picked up their
biggest win of the season, a 5-4 final and as a result earned a
club history high, 7th place finish in the CWPA New York Division.
Another major concern coming into season was "how
will we fill the voids left by the graduation of club co-president
Jackie Minichiello and the loss of key players Lloyd Sindorf, Ari
Krauss, Maddy Micu and Lindsay Burleson to study aboard programs?"
With water polo not necessarily a popular sport on the east coast,
losing five core members was a very daunting situation baring down
upon the club going into 2007. A strong rookie class, along with
the progression of many second year players aided in putting this
issue to rest, as the team currently stand stronger than it was
come this time last year. Second year player Darien Sutton has shown
vast improvements as our sprinter and in the flat, an offensive
position close to the goal on the left or right side of the pool.
Darien also scored his first goal in competition to start off the
5-4 victory ov | |
