@ Skidmore College
(NY) |
| At Skidmor's show today
only 2 team members attended. It was exciting however because the
team coach, Verda, was able to attend with us for the first time this
semester. Alli Lery placed 4th in her open fences class and 6th in
her open flat class. Jennifer Alengi placed 6th in her intermediate
fences class and 3rd in her intermediate flat class. Since the show
was rescheduled from a Saturday to this Tuesday, points were not a
big deal for the team but personal goals were concentrated on. Alli
and Karen qualified for regionals this Saturday , and Jennifer to
attend her last intercollegiate competition of her college career. |

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament |
@ East Stroudsburg,
PA |
| The tournament in East
Stroudsburg on Saturday was what Binghamton needed to start their
season. We started by playing Buck Community College. They were no
match for our high-powered offense and stingy defense and we won 15-6.
We then played East Stroudsburg. We came out hard and played well
on route to another 15-6 victory. After that game we played Bloomsburg
University who were no match for us and we won that game 15-6 as well.
The final game of the day matched the two undefeated teams together,
Binghamton and Scranton. Scranton, who was coming off a bye, seemed
to have a slight advantage over the tired Binghamton team. We lost
one of our players to a prior engagement, and 3 of our other players
were limited due to being sore. We kept the game tight for the first
half, which Scranton took at 7-5. In the second half the exhaustion
set in for us and Scranton won the game 13-8. |

Fencing Event |
@ Woodstock, NY |
| The Woodstock Open began
at 9:30am sharp. There were many foilists lounging about all excited
for the tournament to begin. Women foil started things off. There
were three pools with about six girls in each. Men foil started right
after women, followed by women's epee, men's epee, and finally sabre.
The tournament was usually quiet, without much yelling and screaming
for each point. I believe this tourney was different from others that
I have been to. The point of this tourney was to learn from one another
and gain experience, rather than beat everyone in your weapon and
claim victory. The atmosphere was one of humble respect for everyone's
talent. All in all, I believe everyone had a good time and we are
looking forward to going to RPI this upcoming weekend to represent
the best fencing again. |

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament |
@ Stony Brook University
(NY) |
| This past weekend the
Ultimate Frisbee team went to Stony Brook. The weather was bad, as
was our play. We started off very slowly losing a game to Albany.
We also could not get our acts together against Catholic University.
When we played Hofstra we were still trying to get the kinks out,
but lost a close one. In our cross-over game with the other pool,
we were up against the number 1 seed Drexel University. It was a close
game, but they were the victors 8-7. On Sunday we played better, but
not at our full potential. We lost close games to Stony Brook and
Adelphi. The tournament was a warm up for what is a very loaded spring
schedule. |

| The Women's Rugby Club
was able to kick off their spring season at the annual Village Lion's
Rugby Club's Four Leaf Fifteens Tournament on Randal's Island in New
York City. It was a great experience for the girls all around, where
the Binghamton Women's Rugby Club had the opportunity to play against
two other great women's rugby clubs at this well put together tournament.
The club members played a women's team from Buffalo at 9:20 A.M. followed
by the women's team from New Jersey College at 11:50 A.M. Although
Binghamton put up a good fight and kept their spirits high, they unfortunately
lost to both teams. The final scores were 24-0 against Buffalo and
17-5 against New Jersey College. The club members of Binghamton Women's
Rugby overall shared a great start to their season, and are very excited
for their upcoming events. |

Regionals |
@ Philadelphia, PA |
| In their pool play, the
Binghamton A team lost to both Rutgers and Boston with less than two
minutes left in the game due to costly penalties in the final minute.
Because of this, the Bearcats ended up with the # 8 seed for the quarterfinal
bracket against #1 powerhouse Towson. They easily handed the Bearcats
the loss at 8-1.
The B team avenged an early pool play loss to Towson with a win
vs. Pittsburgh, giving them a #5 seed for the quarterfinal bracket
where they would take on the Wings from Buffalo. Lacking any offense,
the Bearcats B team lost 2-0.
The Bearcats had a very good season but these losses at regionals
have ended their season and they will not move on to the national
tournament.

Racquetball Regional
Event |
@ Albany, NY |
|
This weekend the Binghamton Bearcats Racquetball Club earned a
Third Place Overall Team Finish and Second Place Women's finish
at the 2006 ECRC (Eastern Collegiate Racquetball Conference) Northeast
Regional Racquetball Championships. At this event Binghamton ousted
teams including RPI, Army, Ohio State, UMass, and several SUNY schools
for these finishes. Coming off a third place finish at the last
ECRC league event at Penn State, the club made incredible improvements
in performance, member representation, and player skill as shown
by locking up another third place finish amongst much heavier competition.
The event is a qualifier for the national tournament, and so draws
the largest talent pool from the Northeast. The addition of many
new players this year has given the team a shot of fresh new talent
that, now with some tournament experience, makes the BU young guns
a force to reckon with on the courts.
Leading the club and the entire region in point scoring was Christina
Vandling. She has literally taken the ECRC by storm, upsetting the
entire women's bracket in every ECRC event she has played this year!
Christina not only solidified a women's team for Binghamton University,
she has dominated the highest level Women's Division, uprooting
long standing dominate players from Clarkson and Penn State. Her
doubles partner Jessica Ng filled a vacant spot on the team last
minute this weekend and gave the Binghamton team the extra doubles
points that it needed for both of it's great victories. It simply
would not have happened with out either of these first year players.
The Men's team, lead by unofficial captain and experienced player,
Ryan Levering, continued to climb in the standings, with our star
player Julian Ginos adding a new factor to the top Men's division
and racking up critical points for the Bearcats this weekend. Julian
has made vast improvements to his game this year; through many hours
of practice and commitment, he has grown more than any other player
on the team. The whole league has taken notice of his obvious skill
increase and match up-sets as he leads the men's team in points
and standing. Mike Cohen, another player upon whom the team relies
for high point returns, really helped team Binghamton solidify their
placement at this last ECRC event by working closely and fluidly
with Christina to secure mixed doubles wins and a fourth place finish
in his division. Those placements came at a cost this weekend, as
Mike tore two ligaments in his final Mixed Doubles match. To sum
up the accident, director Shane Wood had these words: "
Gotta
give some props though (to Mike Cohen) for tearing ligaments, and
still asking for the 15 minute injury timeout because he is going
to go out there and finish the match." This was Cohen's last
season playing racquetball for Binghamton and its tragic that he
finishes it out on an injury. Finally, on the men's side three new
players, Andrew Runkel, Cory Johnson, and Kevin Bojko have planted
seeds for Binghamton's future success and continued excellence both
on and off the courts. This trio has added missing depth to the
BU club, allowing us a strong showing in the lower men's divisions.
These three new players have made solid improvements in their games
that add to BU's bottom line in the point standings. They also embody
the best of school spirit and player quality on the courts as well
as off by their loyal time and effort commitments to the club.

In the final race of the
season the Ski Team traveled to a close mountain to
compete. On Saturday the Giant Slalom race was run in a blustery snow
storm and
freezing wind chilled condition. The women ranked 7th among the other
teams led by
Christine Boeckel who finished 27th followed by Charity Walsh in 28th.
Michelle
Pomerantz also finished well in 42nd place.
The men also skied well on Saturday. Overall the men ranked 8th.
Matt Wexler led
the team with a 27th place finish followed by Phil Millspaugh in
30th, Mike Calandra
in 40th who endured a bobble in the course and hiked to finish,
and Chris Bellinzoni
ranked well in 41st place. Craig Rainer did not place in this race
but endured a
terrific fall which served as a reminder of reasons that we wear
helmets. He
finished 41st place on the second run. More results are yet to come
from Sunday's
race as well as the final rankings for the season.

Ice Hockey Game vs Broome
Community College |
@ BCC |
BU faced off against their
cross-town rivals, BCC on Friday night. BU controlled the first period
from the opening face off and controlled all aspects of play. BU tallied
four goals in the first period. Goals were scored by Dave Haase on
a hard low shot on the power play and Sean Marcel and John Sibbila
on rebounds. Bill Woerner also scored and the Bearcats
had a 4-0 lead after one period of play. BU looked a little flat in
the second period and allowed BCC to get back into them a game. The
score was 6-4, in favor of BU after the second. Haase scored his second
goal of the game, and so did Woerner. BU's play improved in the third
and John Scavone scored off a high shot and Chris Davison scored a
long empty net goal to clinch the 8-5 victory.

Ice Hockey Home Game
vs Slippery Rock University |
@ Chenengo Ice Rink,
7:45 pm |
The Bearcats faced off
against Slippery Rock in their last league game of the season. The
game would be physical and hard fought on both sides. Slippery Rock
struck first scoring two goals in the first period, however the game
was played closely on each side. Slippery Rock would enter the first
intermission with a 2-0 lead. The second period would have its
problems for BU and they allowed Slippery Rock to score four goals
to their one. Doug Centola scored the only Bearcat goal during that
period, as BU found themselves down 6-1 after two periods. Most of
the third period was played very tight with neither team scoring.
Then with about four minutes to play in the game, BU scored from a
goal by Bill Woerner.
Less than thirty seconds later, BU scored again, this time from Centola
and his second of the game. The Bearcats would go on to score again,
off shot from Sean Marcel to score three goals in about four minutes
time. Although, BU battled back, it wouldn't be enough for victory
and Slippery Rock skated to a close 6-4 win.

Ice Hockey Home Game

@ Chenengo Ice Rink,
8:30 pm |
| The Bearcats faced off
against Syracuse University with intentions of extending their winning
streak to three. The game opened with quick play from both sides and
Syracuse struck first and gained an early 2-0 lead after the first
period. The Bearcats did not give up and played very well in the beginning
of the second period and tied the score at two. Bryan Coughlin scored
on a high shot from the point and Dave Haase scored high on a 5 on
3 power play from the goal line to tie the score. The Bearcats kept
fighting and the physical play of the game heightened and led to a
give minute major power play for SU. Binghamton was able to hold them
to only one power play goal. Syracuse would score two more goals that
period, but Sean Marcel would score for the Bearcats making the score
5-3 after the second period. The Bearcats would make the score 5-4
on Marcel's second goal of the game but it wouldn't be enough as SU
would skate to a 7-4 win. |

| The Binghamton Bearcats
traveled to Rochester this weekend with a very short bench of only
9 skaters to face off against the University of Rochester. Because
of the shortage of players, BU shuffled their lines and had players
play at positions they don't normally play. The Bearcats opened the
scoring early in the first period by a goal from Doug Centola. U of
R bounced back and scored three consecutive goals and took the lead.
The Bearcats did not give up and received two more goals from Centola
to complete his hat trick in the first period, and another goal by
Chris Davison. BU entered the second period with two goals from Rob
Gilbert. Josh Case also scored on a one-timer in front of the net
and BU held a 7-3 lead in between the second and third periods. The
Bearcats did not let up in the third period and scored an early goal
again from Doug Centola for his fourth of the game. The Bearcats played
a solid team game to sustain the lead. Rochester would score later
in the period but BU held on for the 8-5 victory and their second

Racquetball ECRC Tournament |
@ Penn State U. (State
College, PA) vs. Penn State, RPI, Bryant, Clarkson, Oneionta. |
| The team had its best
performance ever thanks in large part to Christina's overall woman's
victory and strong finishes by Binghamton men's players. In the lower
divisions helping to raise the overall score men's 2 division with
Mike Cohen and Pokora also finished well, not winning any overall
categories but both taking wins in key games for 3rd place. Ryan and
Julian both made a strong showing in men's one division and took the
most points for the men's team in the upper level play. Having a robust
team at all levels has greatly increased the Bearcats overall placement
in the ECRC. With over 15 schools at this event our overall 3rd place
finish was incredible ousting RPI for the spot by over 150 points.
The Bearcats are on this year and looking for a strong finish at the
4th and final event. Ranked 5th in the league, we are in position
for a possible 3rd place finish by year-end. |

The Ski Team traveled
upstate again to a race outside Rochester. Although it rained
all day on Saturday, the team braved the cold wet weather to finish
respectably

in the Giant
Slalom Race. Christine Boeckel Led the team with a 29th place finish
followed by
Charity Walsh in 38th, and Michelle Pomerantz in 62nd place.
The men braved a torrential downpour in the middle of the second
run of Giant Slalom on Saturday but managed to finish in 13th place
as a team. Phil Millspaugh led the way in 35th followed by Matt
Wexler in 43rd, Craig Rainer in 64th, and Chris
Bellinzoni in 72nd. Mike Clanadra encountered rough terrain in the
course and was
unable to finish his first run. On Sunday the conditions turned
bitter cold and the
snow turned into a giant sheet of ice. The men finished impressively
in 11th place.
Mike Calandra again had trouble at Bristol Mountain and was unable
to finish his
run, Matt Wexler also had some problems. He began the 2nd run in
13th place but was disqualified for missing a gate. Phil Millspaugh
held things together and pulled a

Ice Hockey Home Game
(Chenango Ice Rink) |
vs. Rutgers, 1:30pm |
| Binghamton University was
able to outlast the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a Saturday afternoon
showdown. Binghamton was the first on the scoreboard a minute into
the game, as Sean Marcel gave the Bearcats an early lead. About three
minutes later, a shot from the point from Dan Gross put the Bearcats
up by two only four minutes into the game. Binghamton was not able
to build on the momentum as Rutgers surged to score four goals before
the end of the first period. Despite the two goal deficit Binghamton
battled back in the second period, with goals coming from Rob Gilbert
and Dan Gross, with Rutgers getting a late break-away tally, maintaining
a 5-4 lead to end the period. The third period was a battle to the
end, as Tom Kitay got the game tying goal early into the period. Five
minutes later, a flurry of offense by the Bearcats found them up by
two, with goals coming from Doug Centola and a nice breakaway move
from Juston Dascher-Shapiro. A Rutgers goal cut the lead to one for
the Bearcats, only to have John Scavone get the eventual game winner
with a breakaway midway through the period. Rutgers would desperately
try to regain the win, and put in a goal with five minutes left in
the contest. However, a solid effort by all the Bearcats let them
hang on to the one goal lead and win the game, 8-7. Adam Leach had
an excellent game in net, finishing with 41 saves on 45 shots as Binghamton
got its first win of the semester, and second of the season.

| We didn't play as well
as we had hoped. We started slowly in our first game and were never
able to recover. As the day went along, we did start to play better.
It was unfortunate that we had to play some of the better teams when
we were playing better. The second day we played well, but could not
put together a full game, and again finished winless. The playoffs
started and with a bottom seed, we could not keep up with the faster,
taller teams. |
