Roller Hockey ECRHA Event
|
@Harrisburg, PA
|
|
The Binghamton University Roller Hockey Club finished the fall
semester with some very important victories this weekend at the
ECRHA (Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association) regular season
event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Bearcats 'A' team finished
the weekend 2-1, beating division rivals R.I.T. and Penn State,
4-2 and 6-4, respectively. The only loss came at the hands of
the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.
Facing R.I.T. for the second time this semester, goalie Adam Leach
made some big saves to keep the Bearcats ahead as R.I.T. stepped
up the pressure in the 3rd period. The team finished up the semester
with a 5-4-1 record and currently is tied for 1st place in ECRHA's
Division I Central Conference. The 'A' team had strong performances
by team captain John Cahill, forward Mike Guerriero, as well as
defenseman Chris Bagwell. Both Cahill and Guerriero are in the
top 3 for the ECRHA Division I scoring title.
The Bearcats 'B' team continued their domination and went undefeated
for the weekend. With three victories against Stony Brook, Penn
State, and West Chester, the 'B' team concluded the semester with
a 7-1-2 record. The 'B' team currently sits atop the Northern
Conference in ECRHA's 'B' Division. An independent ranking committee
has voted the Bearcats the #14 team nationwide. Dave Shapiro continued
his stellar play in net and was supported by a balanced offensive
attack led by Mike Cahill, Matt Capriotto, Lee Garrett, and Tom
Moore.
The Bearcats can now enjoy a well deserved break from play until
All-Star Weekend in Philadelphia, to be held during the first
weekend in February.

Racquetball ECRC Meet #2
|
@Albany, NY
|
|
The Binghamton Club Racquetball team traveled to Albany, NY this
weekend to participate in the second Eastern Collegiate Racquetball
Conference (ECRC) meet of the year. A record eleven players made
the trip to help earn a fifth place finish in the men's division
for the club. Those attending the event witnessed an incredible
level of play by students from across the northeast, including
many upset victories. Binghamton's top finishers included Ryan
Levering, placing second in the Men's 1 Blue Division, Peter Ochoa,
winning the Men's 2 Blue Division, and Dave Manger, finishing
third in the Men's 4 Gold Division.
The skills and experience earned at this tournament provide a
solid foundation on which the club can build in preparation for
the next ECRC meet hosted by Penn State University on the first
weekend in February.

The Bearcats traveled
north to play a three game tournament in Syracuse. BU's first game
was against the host team, Syracuse University. The Bearcats got
themselves into early trouble and were down by two early. BU battled
back and scored two quick powerplay goals by Bryan Cloke. Aaron
Woolf then gave the Bearcats a 3-2 lead after the first period.
Syracuse then regained control in the second period and took a 5-4
lead with BU's goal coming from Eddie Barrett. Syracuse once again
took the lead at 6, but the Bearcats didn't give up. Late Bearcat
goals came from Pete Hilliger and Doug Centola. Orrie Markfeld gave
his best effort between the pipes, but Syracuse scored a late goal
and an empty netter to take the
8-6 victory.
Next, the Bearcats faced off against Ithaca College. It would
be a chippy game full of penalties. Ithaca scored first off a
powerplay shot from the point. BU kept their composure and went
on a 4 goal stretch. BU goals were scored on the powerplay by
Bryan Cloke, Aaron Woolf off a nice deflection and Pete Hilliger.
Doug Centola also scored. Ithaca College staged a comeback and
brought the game to 4-3. BU squashed their chances when Bill Woerner
scored off a nice feed by Tom Kitay. Colin Rosenbaum played well
in goal for the Bearcats. BU went on to win 5-3.
BU's final game was against Cornell University. Cornell jumped
on the Bearcats early and scored three quick goals in the first
period. BU was able to score on the powerplay by a nice shot in
the slot by Judson Dacher-Shapiro to keep the game close after
one period of play. Cornell controlled the second period and scored
five more goals. The Bearcats would score two more goals, one
from Doug Centola and the other from Bryan Coughlin on the powerplay.
BU played their best period in the third, and allowed two more
goals to Cornell and scored two more goals. Chris Davison scored
high from the point, and Doug Centola added his second goal of
the game also on the powerplay top shelf. BU lost 10-5.
The Bearcats will play their last game of the semester on Friday
12/8 at the Chenango Ice Rink (Chenango Bridge, NY) against Syracuse
University. Face Off is 7:30pm.

The Binghamton University
fencing club had their first tournament of the year on Sunday November
12th. It was an individual tournament, meaning that there were no
teams; everyone fenced everyone else. The tournament was a success
for the first tournament of the year, and Binghamton had a few of
its own members place in the different events. Michael Krumholz
placed first in the sabre event, Jason Behar Placed second in Sabre,
and Michael Reinhart Placed First in Foil. Overall the Binghamton
fencers all fenced well and it was a good tournament over all. The
beginner fencers who started only in mid September also fenced well
and placed rather high in both the seedings and final standings.
Congratulations to all who participated and we hope to see all of
you at our next upcoming tournaments.

Softball League Game |
@Family Sports Complex,
6pm |
| This past Sunday, the
12th of November, the BUCS fought valiantly against the TA Bailey
Trucking tea. The BUCS are planning to protest this game after discovering
that the opposing team was using illegal bats during gameplay. Although
scoring 12 runs, unfortunately the team was defeated. "There
was not much we do about it other than just shake it off and start
planning ofr our game next week. The bats they were using were banned
from all leagues in the City of Binghamton as of last summer, and
there was just no way that any of our players could catch up to
any of those hits," said Michael Boykin, the team President.
Boyki continued on, saying, "We played our hardest and that's
all anyone can ask of us." The team is eagerly awaiting next
week's competition, and will continue to practice druing the wekk. |

the defense held strong resulting in a final score of 22-18.

Ice Hockey at Ithaca Bombers

The Bearcats were on the road and traveled to
Ithaca to face off against
Ithaca College. BU came ready to play and controlled the early
parts of
the game. BU opened the scoring on the power play off a low shot
by Pete
Hilliger. The Bearcats kept pressing but were unable to score
again
during the first period. BU came out in the second period with
the same
intensity but had problems finishing. Once again they were only
able to
score one goal, when a streaking Chris Davison received a nice
pass from
Judson Dacher-Shapiro and fired a low shot past the goalie. The
Bearcats
were able to break open the scoring in the third and scored three
more
goals. Pete Hilliger scored and Jake Agoos buried one on the powerplay.
BU got into penalty trouble late in the game and gave up two powerplay
goals. The Bearcats would go on to win the game 5-2 and extend
their
winning streak to three games. Their record improved to 4 wins
and 2
losses.

during the regular season, was given a run for their money. We held
them in a 0-0 tie for 90 minutes of play, even through a penalty
kick opportunity. The team really came together in this final game
of the season. Highlights include play by the goalie, Diana Motti,
who stopped countless shots on goal. The defense really stepped
up their play today, working as a team in all aspects of the word.
We had a fun, bonding weekend at Buffalo. |

Men's Soccer Games
vs Penn State and James Madison |
@Penn State University,
10am and 6pm |
|
On Saturday, November 4th, the Bingmton University Men's Club
Soccer team traveled to State College, PA to play Penn State and
James Madison in their final outdoor competition of the Fall semester.
The first game was against Penn State, the second ranked team
in Region 1. BU came ready to play and stormed out to a 1-0 lead
midway through the first half after a nice goal from Jesse Spirio.
Both teams had their chances in the first half, but the Binghamton
side was the first to capitalize, taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime
break. After relinquishing a two goal lead two weeks ago in their
tie against Syracuse, BU started the second half determined to
come out the winner. Unfortunately, this wasn't to be, as the
experienced Penn State squad scored 3 goals to go up 3-1. Late
in the game, Binghamton pressured to make up ground, and when
Matt Powers was taken down in the box, BU was awarded a penalty
kick. A calm and composed Jesse Spirio buried the PK, netting
his second goal, to make the score 3-2. Binghamton continued to
pressure in the final minutes but could not come up with an equalizer.
Though they did not get the result they wanted, the BU squad played
hard and should be proud of their performance against the national
powerhouse Penn State.
BU played the second game against James Madison to a 0-0 draw.
It was a physical game, with Binghamton getting most of the chances.
Early in the first half, Emir Guney rifled a shot off the crossbar,
nearly giving BU the lead. BU continued to pressure throughout
the game, but the squad couldn't seem to find the goal. The final
whistle blew without a goal from either side. A good effort was
put in by all players from the BU side despite the goalless draw.
All in all, it was a fun weekend of two quality soccer games for
the Binghamton University Men's Club Soccer Team, who finished
the year with an impressive record of 4-2-2.

for their next pre-season outing. |

Field Hockey League
Playoff Tournament |
@Syracuse University |
The Club Field Hockey
team headed into the New York State Field Hockey League Playoffs
this weekend in Syracuse on Saturday seeded second to their one
loss of the season Ithaca in the Central Division. Ithaca however
dropped out late in the tournament giving the Bearcats a window;
win the two games in Syracuse, leaving only the finals in Buffalo
against the winner of the Western division. With the momentum of
the 5-0 win over Cortland the previous weekend, Binghamton felt
they were on their way to the semifinals. Arriving in Orange territory,
Binghamton first had to play Cortland again, this time in a seven
v. seven set up because Cortland couldn't muster more of a roster.
The Bearcats dominated much like last game from the beginning coming
out on top with a huge lead, 7-1. Goals were scored by Dominic Young,
Jessica Leis, Rob DeSotle, Mark Ziminsky, and Shailesh Khadapkar.
KC 'Lil Champ' Sulikowski played the entire game as goalie making
three saves.
The next game was against Syracuse who had knocked out Lemoyne in
the preliminaries. Syracuse after having time to rest and watch
Binghamton's game came out strong to remind them that they had to
win here first to get to the championship. Syracuse unlike Cortland
had a deep roster, keeping fresh legs on the field while the Bearcats
only had two substitute players. After a time out in the first half
Nicole Keane was able to change the game strategy to try to cut
off the Orange offense, which succeeded to give the Bearcats a significant
lead of 5-2 . After intense play, the Bearcats held off Orange to
win 5-4. Binghamton shined on taking advantage of corner plays and
working the ball up the line in transitions.
The only other obstacles in the way of the Bearcats to winning the
Championship were the distance, time and numbers. After playing
two high tempo games the team had to make the trip up to Buffalo,
thus having the long hours of driving wear on the players physically
and mentally. Also the roster decreased in size by two, making the
final total equal to eleven, the exact number necessary to play!
But the heart our players put into the game made these disadvantages
unrecognizable. They were excuses only losers would use to back
a loss, but the Bearcats were determined to win. Bearcats knowing
what was at stake went out on Sunday with no substitutes against
University at Buffalo and left it "all out on the field"
(Nicole Keane). Shailesh Khadapkar one of the center mids wrote
to his teammates, "I appreciate every team member's effort
in pulling of such fantastic victories. The fact that we were just
11 players, against a whole army of 25 for the games made me enjoy
our victories even more. Frankly, I never thought it would get so
tough in the end, after watching the type of oppositions we encountered
earlier in the season. It was really tough on the team to stave
off such daunting oppositions with grit, and play then entire game
with almost no subs." The University of Buffalo was the victor
of the Western Division and had the advantage of playing the final
game on their home field turf and they came out in full force looking
confidant they would take home the trophy. The Bulls however were
caught off guard, with the Bearcats scoring first by right wing
attack, Jessica Serrao. At the half Binghamton lead the game, 1-
0 and had kept control of the ball the entire half. Buffalo was
getting frustrated. They were unable to breakdown the Bearcats defense,
led by captain, Nicole Keane. The Bulls were also unable to shut
down the Binghamton offense because as soon as they tried to double
one player another Bearcat came up with a play. It was a great game
because every member of the Bearcat team contributed to the game
in a positive way, they had no weaknesses that could be targeted.
Having limited shots on goal, Buffalo was given a break when a scramble
occurred in the middle of the second half in front of the Binghamton
goal and a stroke was called. A stroke which is a penalty shot,
as in any sport it is a situation of high emotions and can tip the
scale in the other team's favor. Goalie Catherine Sullivan having
experience with strokes was able to get her glove on the ball, but
was able to stop the shot, thus making the score 1-1. This did not
rattle the team or change their play, after a time out the team
came out with more energy which Buffalo could not believe they still
had. With three minutes left to play, Dominic Young scored the second
goal for the Bearcats. Buffalo tried to rally with two corner plays
but were unable to penetrate the Binghamton defense. In the end,
it was the heart that the Bearcats possessed that won the game,
not the brilliant hockey. This mentality is proven even stronger
by the final cheer the Bearcats used to raise the spirits of the
team, "Heart wins games."
This is the first League Championship that the Field Hockey Team
has won and it is a tremendous accomplishment because of the young
age of the club as well as its players. Furthermore the teams that
enter in the championship are usually club teams from powerhouse
D-1 field hockey programs, whose players are previous varsity athletes
or are aspiring to make the D-1 teams. Binghamton was considered
even with their record the underdogs of the tournament. "The
next time around, other teams will treat Binghamton with respect"
(Khadapkar) and now we have a title to uphold and defend with honor
due to our hard work.

The Bearcats were on
the road this Saturday as they traveled to Cornell

and
allowed a lot of shots. Midway through the first, Chris Davison
whistled
a shot short side from the point to score a power play goal and
open the
scoring. The period would end with a 1-0 lead in favor of BU. In
the
beginning of the second period, BU really got going tallying three
more
goals. Doug Centola scored his first of the game off a nice individual
effort. Freshman Jake Agoos scored his first goal of the season
after
making a nice move and putting a low shot past the goalie. Centola
and
Judson Dacher-Shapiro hooked up shorthanded after moving in two
on one,
and Centola feathered a pass to Dacher-Shapiro for the lay up goal.
BU
continued their solid play through the third and added two more
goals when
Aaron Woolf battled in front and put one in. Centola also added
his
second of the game during the third. Bearcat goaltender Orrie Markfeld
played a very solid game and registered 39 saves and gave his team
an
excellent chance to win. The Bearcats increased their record to
2-2 and

| This weekend the Binghamton
University Racquetball Club participated in the first of four Eastern
Collegiate Racquetball Conference (ECRC) meets, earning a 12th place
finish in the men's division. The low performance of the team may
have been due to the small number of players that attended, inexperience
of new team members in a tournament setting, and lack of a women's
team. Many players were forced to play in divisions higher than
their skill level due to the absence of veteran players Julian Ginos
and Cory Johnson. Regardless, all played very competitively and
improved over the course of the weekend. Of note was Andrew Runkel's
first round win in the Men's 2 division to secure a spot in the
Blue bracket and Kevin Bojko's 4th place finish in his division.

Ultimate
Frisbee at Skylander Tournament vs. various teams |
Edinboro
University (PA) |
| This past weekend the
Ultimate Frisbee team went to Edinsburo, Pennsylvania to play in
a very competitive tournament. We were shorthanded bringing only
9 players to this tournament. We went into the tournament as the
19th seed out of 20 teams. This did not last long. We played very
well the first 3 games and won them all easily by the scores of
13-4, 13-2, and 13-4 respectively. Our last game we were obviously
tired, but still won pretty handily 13-7. With a record of 4-0 we
were going to make the "elite" winners bracket. For Sunday,
we were the top seed from the "weaker" pools playing against
the winners of the elite division. We were the 11 seed overall,
up against the University of Rochester who was the 6 seed. We were
very sluggish at the beginning of the game and fell to a 5-0 deficit.
We called a timeout at that point to catch our breath. After that
we stayed with them the rest of the way and lost 11-7. From the

BU traveled to Princeton,
New Jersey to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights
in attempts to extend their winning streak to two games in the early
season. The Bearcats had a slow start and Rutgers controlled the
first
period and outshot BU 22-5. Freshman goalie Colin Rosenbaum made
his
first start at BU and was up to the task. He weathered the storm
and only
allowed one goal in the first period. The Bearcats came played a
much
better second period and tied the score at one, when Tom Kitay had
a
beautiful deflection off a Bryan Coughlin shot from the point. Rutgers
rallied and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Rutgers
followed the second period with a strong third period and went on
to score
two more goals. The Bearcats had many opportunities but were unable
to
capitalize and fell 4-2.

@
Cornell University, 10:30am kick-off. |
| The Binghamton University
Women's Rugby Club, ranked 4th in the Division 1 Standings for New
York State Rugby faced off against the number 1 seed team for the
division, Cornell University. Although the club put up a good fight,
they did not have enough to take over Cornell. The weather held
out for the day with no rain, although the numerous puddles all
over the field made playing difficult. The loss of this game brought
an end to the Binghamton Women's Rugby Club's season. The girls
are very proud of their performance throughout the entire season,
and had a lot of fun. The girls have an upcoming annual tournament
in November that they will be entering two teams for, and are very
excited for it. |

| The
Binghamton University Men's Club Soccer Team traveled to
Syracuse University on Sunday, 10/22. The teams tied the game 2-2
on a cold, rainy day. The field conditions made for a tough game,
as most of the field was torn up and muddy. BU scored one early,
as Teddy Levarda headed home a corner kick from Matt Powers. In
the second half, JJ Gould put BU up 2-0. But despite a solid effort
from the Binghamton defense and goalkeeper Chris Kinlen, Syracuse
pressured constantly and were able to steal 2 late goals and earn
the draw. It was a good lesson for the Binghamton squad, who vowed
to toughen up next time and protect their lead. |

back.
BU went on to score four goals in the first period. Judson Dacher-Shapiro
notched his first goal of the season when he poked in a rebound
after
freshman defenseman Eddie Barrett rushed the puck. John Scavone
and Tom
Kitay also scored rebound goals during the first period. Hobart
scored a
late goal and the first period ended with a 4-1 Bearcat lead. BU

| This past weekend the
Ultimate Frisbee team went to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.
The tournament was only one day which made everyone play their hardest.
We were the bottom seed in our pool to start the day, but surprised
many teams. Our first game was against the Skidmore Alums, who went
on to win the tournament. We held with them for part of the game,
but they pulled away at the end. Our next game was against Hampshire
College. We came out hard and were able to beat them pretty easily.
In our final game of the tournament we played against a club team
from Southern New York. They were good, but could not keep up with
our intensity. We ended up beating them 13-10. We ended the tournament
2-1 and we showed teams that they will be afraid of us in upcoming
events. |

| The Binghamton Women's
Rugby Club played a tough game against the Syracuse Women's Rugby
Club. The result of the game was a score of 48-0 in favor of Syracuse.
Binghamton was missing a few of their starting players due to injuries
faced during the season and other conflicts. Despite the loss, the
club kept their heads high and put their full energy into the game.
This was the last scheduled conference game for the girls, who played
very well for themselves during their fall season. The club is now
ranked in 4th place for the New York State Rugby Division 1 Conference.
The results of the season qualify the club for playoffs. The club
will be playing the number 1 seed, Cornell University on 10-21-06

players are licking their wounds today after being torn apart by

time playing on turf were able to dominate the powerhouse Cornell
on their home turf field for an overall win of 3 to 1. Cornell players
were shocked and frustrated by Binghamton's ability to see open
players and their dynamic stick skills under pressure. New players
Dominic Young and Shailesh Khadapkar had a great connection during
the game; Young scoring all three goals while Khadapkar led in assists.
Birthday girl Colleen Cheverko stepped up her game on her big day
as well. The team only improved their game as they increased their
lead over Cornell. This win secures a major accomplishment and a
positive outlook for this year's season. |

Ice Rink, 7:30pm |
The Bearcats Ice Hockey
team opened their season facing off against the
Oswego Lakers. The game started at a quick pace, but would later
slow
down due to the new rule changes and each team's lack of experience
with
these changes. The Bearcats opened the scoring halfway through the
first
with a rebound goal by freshman Pete Hilliger. BU would be playing
on the
penalty kill for the rest of the first period and Oswego tied the
score at
1 goal a piece after the first period. The second period was more
high
scoring and special teams played a very important role. Due to some
bad
luck, the Lakers were able to score two easy goals and put in another
on
the power play. BU stayed in the game and Pete Hilliger added his
second
goal of the game off a nice deflection and Bryan Cloke scored off
a Laker
defenseman. The second period concluded with a 4-3 Oswego lead.
The
third period would be controlled by the Lakers on the power play.
They
added three more goals but the Bearcats attempted to make it close
when
Doug Centola scored on a breakaway. The Bearcats played well for
their
first game together but fell to Oswego 7-4.

luckily the weather gave the girls favorable conditions. Despite
the fans present to support and cheer on the Binghamton girls, Cornell
took an early lead on the game, and continued strong throughout.
Both the defensive and offensive lines for Binghamton looked great
in comparison to how we had played all season, but it was not enough
to hold off Cornell. The final result was a win for Cornell of 50-0
against Binghamton. Despite the loss faced by the Binghamton Women's

The Binghamton University Men's Club Soccer Team traveled to
Colgate University to play an exhibition game against Colgate's
Soccer Club. The team from BU ended up losing by the score of
3-1. After giving up 2 goals in the first half, a comeback seemed
in the cards as a goal from Matt Powers early in the second half
put BU on the board. Binghamton was building momentum in their
attack and it appeared as though the tying goal would be delivered
shortly. Unfortunately, Colgate crushed the dreams of the Binghamton
squad when they scored their 3rd and final goal about ten minutes
later. The Binghamton team, which only had one sub for the match,
lost the momentum and the wind was taken out of its sails. Tired
legs pressed on, trying to make a push for offense, but it wasn't
to be. The final whistle blew, and the Binghamton University Men's
Club Soccer team (A squad) was dealt their first loss of the semester.
In a moment of inspiration, after reflecting on the game, the
players all decided it would also be the last loss of the season.

On Sunday, October 1, the Binghamton University Men's Club Soccer
Team traveled to SUNY Cortland to compete in a Round Robin Tournament.
Binghamton's first opponent, Bucknell University, arrived very late
and had to forfeit so the tournament could continue as scheduled.
Perhaps they were nervous to face the Binghamton team after Binghamton
beat them in an exhibition match just two weeks earlier. Binghamton
faced Rutgers in game two, which turned out to be a hard fought
battle. BU took a 2-0 lead behind well earned goals from Mike Mokrzycki.
Rutgers battled back and scored a nice goal midway through the second
half. They pressed for an equalizer, but Binghamton held strong.
Will Graeper sealed the deal for BU scoring their third goal leading
Binghamton to a 3-1 victory. In the final game of the day, the BU
Club soccer team was determined to finish the day undefeated. Binghamton
went up against the host team Cortland, and BU dominated the game
with great teamwork and ball movement. A first half goal from JJ
Gould put BU up 1-0, and Juan Carlos Corona added another in the
second half to give Binghamton University a 2-0 win over Cortland.
BU finished the day with 3 wins and zero losses and a 1st place
finish. It was an outstanding day for the men's club soccer team.

first half and adding 4 more in the second, to cruise to a 7-0
victory. The Binghamton side was very well organized and controlled
the possession for the entire game, creating one opportunity after
another. Goals were scored by seven different players: J.J. Gould,
Juan Carlos Corona, Jesse Spirio, Erik Jones, Regis Venti, Yvan
Fortunat, and Steve Ferazzoli. The home team was unlucky not to
score a few more, as the chances piled up throughout the game.
