Blades crashed as Michael Krumholtz furiously parries Jamie Fuseal's
attacks. Dropping back, he lunges forward striking Fuseal in the
chest. "Bout" yells the director, 15-14 Krumholz. Mike,
sweating and tired walks off the strip with an epic grin. When asked
how does he feel, Mike answers "like some one in first place
should feel, tired and satisfied."
Eliot Greene and Eric Nelson, both BU fencers traded blow for blow
in another unforgettable 15-14 bout with Eliot dashing forward to
get the final touch.
BU fencing dominated the saber events with 4 of the top 5 rankings
held by BU fencers under the guidance of Michael Krumholz. One can
only wonder what this team will be able to do next year.

Swim Club Meet

@ Albany, NY
|
|
The Binghamton Swim Club went to a meet in Albany on May 6th. Although
they did not come out victorious, many of the swimmers broke personal
records. Halfway through the meet Binghamton only trailed by half
a point and in the end, only lost by a few points thanks to some
very talented swimmers.
Ray, a freshman and new to the team this year won three out of
the four events he swam. He finished the 50 free style in under
one minute beating his personal best of 1:02. Sara, the swim club
president, finished second in the 50 backstroke with 39 seconds
trailing the first place winner by only one second. Everyone who
participated had a great time and the meet ended with the Albany
and Binghamton teams going for pizza.

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
|
@ SUNY Oneonta
|
|
This past weekend the Ultimate Team went to Oneonta for their first
annual tournament. We did not have as strong numbers as we
would have liked due to the forecast. The team went with 9
players. Everybody played hard and we went 3-1 on Saturday.
The forecast for Sunday looked slightly better. We were only
able to scrounge up 8 players for Sunday. This looked disastrous
for us. It turned out that the 8 who went were dedicated to
winning. We took the first game easily 15-1. In the
second game fatigue started to set in. We were down early
7-1. This did not stop our drive to win. We played hard
and came back to tie the game 14-14. At this point our legs
started to give out and the fresher team was able to take the next
2 points and the game. We would have liked to win our final
tournament of the season, but can not complain about a 4-2 record
for the weekend.

the near impossible defensive triple play in the 4th, the BUCS played
at their finest. The team ended their indoor season on a two game
winning streak, ranking 4th in the league. Our player of the game,
Vincent Dispigno, #31 led the team throughout the entire game, going
4 - 4 and pitching 7 innings on no walk softball. "I couldn't ask

Women's Volleyball NIRSA National Tournament
|
@ Louisville, KY
|
| At the national tournament
in Louisville, Kentucky, the women’s club volleyball team faced
some very tough competition. On the first day of pool play they
were up against Ohio State, UC Davis, and Georgetown. After some hard
played games, the team took fourth overall in the pool and continued
on to another day of pool play. On the following day, the Bearcats
faced Texas State, Texas A&M, and Delaware A. During the last
game of the night, Binghamton faced Delaware, a team that they had
played all year long. In an impressive 3 game win, the Bearcats
took 3rd in their pool, which placed them in the Copper division for
bracket play. The first match of the day, Binghamton went up against
The College of New Jersey, another team that they had seen all year,
and defeated them with scores of 25-18 and 25-19. The next game for
the team was against Cortland who the Bearcats eventually lost to
in a hard fought three game match. |

Racquetball ECRC Meet
|
@ Burlington, VT
|
| The men's team did well
in Vermont. Wins by Ryan Dunham gave him the best success he has had
this year. Excellent effort was put in by all players despite playing
shortly after a long drive. The final standings were given after the
team left early due too rising weather concerns. Team Binghamton arrived
in Burlington Vermont with a little time to spare before the first
matches went off. It was a rough start for the team with only the
mens ones doubles team of Ryan Levering and Kevin Bojko and Ryan Dunham
in singles winning. The competition was tough with a few wins coming
on Saturday as the team reasserted itself. Dave Manger played all
but one match to tie breaker showing how close everybody was. The
most points were won by Ryan and Kevin, finishing 3rd in Mens ones
doubles. The tournament ended uneasily as teams departed before the
approaching snow storm struck fully. Team Binghamton made it back
safely sunday night. |

Women's Rugby at Keystone Cup Tournament
|
@ Philadelphia, PA
|
|
Binghamton Women's Rugby played fiercely at the Keystone Cup Tournament,
despite not having several key players in their line-up.
The team played hard and well their first game. Although they lost
35-0 to last year's tournament champion, Shippensburg Women's Rugby,
their efforts forced the opposing team to work for every try they
scored. The girls left the field in good spirits, with their heads
up, proud of the way they had played against such a phenomenal team.
There was much anticipation going into their second game against
Temple university. BUWRFC had played Temple at their previous tournament
in Randall's Island and suffered a great defeat of 37-5. However
with a few weeks of outdoor practice under their belt, it was evident
by the first scrum that BUWRFC was a different team than the bearcats
who had played at Randall's. the first half was tense. Due to the
tournament policy of "continual play with as few penalties
as possible," Temple was able to break many rules of the game.
Despite these infractions, Binghamton played fairly and cleanly,
allowing only one Try during the first half. Temple missed the 2
point conversion, leaving the score at 5-0 after the first half.
In the second half, Natalia Casino, the 8-man for Binghamton was
able to score in the last seconds of the game. Nicole Hauptman made
the 2 point conversion kick, winning the game.
BUWRFC chose not to play in the consolation championship game due
to impending weather.

|
The women’s club lacrosse team headed down to Long Island
to face the Stony Brook club team on Saturday, March 31st. Despite
having only half of the team present, the ladies controlled the
afternoon matchup. The first half was highlighted by goalie Gabby
Mannino saving just about everything that came her way, allowing
only two goals in during the 25-minute half. Midfielders and low
offensive players made a habit of making beautiful transitions.
In the beginning of the second half, Stony Brook showed signs of
a comeback only to be stuffed down by dominant defensive play. Binghamton
won by a final score of 14-6. The ladies hope to bring their good
chemistry this weekend to the University of Rhode Island, where
they will be playing in four games in a division tournament.

Ultimate Frisbee @ Stony Brook Tournament
|
@ Stony Brook, NY
|
|
This past weekend Binghamton Ultimate took 2 teams to a tournament
at SUNY Stony Brook. With only 17 people, and 7 on the field
at once we were very short on numbers. We had put 9 people
on one team and 8 on the other team. The “A” team,
which started with 9 players, won two easy games 13-0, and 13-3
to start the day. In our third game we took an early 6-2 lead
against a very competitive RPI team. We then had two injuries
leave us with the bare minimum of players to finish the day.
Even with all seven people being forced to play the rest of the
game we were able to keep the game close. We forced the game
to a sudden death point. RPI took the point and the game.
In our final game of the day we played a more rested Stony Brook
team. We lost to them 13-10. Sunday came and we decided
to combine both teams. Our first game put us against NYU.
We were the underdogs, but didn’t play like it. We stayed
with them the entire way. We were forced to play another sudden
death point. This time we came out victorious and won by a
score of 10-9. Our second game was against the first seeded
SUNY Albany. They took the first few points and never looked
back. We lost to them 13-7. We finished the tournament
3-3. This was a good result for our first outdoor play since
last semester.

Men's Soccer vs Rutgers and TCNJ
|
@ Rutgers University, 1pm
|
|
On Sunday, March 25th, the Binghamton University Men's Club Soccer
team traveled to New Brunswick, NJ to play against Rutgers University
and The College of New Jersey(TCNJ). the first game against Rutgers
was a hard fought battle, which ended as a 1-1 draw. Binghamton
got on the board first, after Juan Carlos Corona converted a penalty
kick midway through the first half. Shortly after, Rutgers was awarded
a penalty kick of their own, which they scored to draw level. In
the second half, it appeared the game could have gone either way,
as both teams had plenty of chances. No one could break the deadlock,
and the game finished with the score of 1-1.
The second game saw BU take on TCNJ. BU dominated the first half
and took the lead behind a goal from Emir Guney. In the second half,
TCNJ pressured but were denied in front of the goal on several occasions
by senior keeper Anton Deshenko, who ensured BU held on for a 1-0
victory.

then crushed their opponents in the second, leading to the third tiebreaker.
Although fired up, the team was unable to close the deal. With a 2

Women's Lacrosse Round Robin Tournament

|
The Binghamton Women’s Club Lacrosse team had a road trip
this Sunday for a double header in Kutztown, PA. The lady’s
first game for the semester was against NYU. Binghamton’s
team has nearly tripled its size in the past year and for many girls
this was the first time playing with each other. The Bearcats played
hard, but the game wrapped up with a score of 15-7 NYU. Binghamton’s
second game was against Kutztown. Our girls jumped off to a lead
with goals by newbies, Shawna Rocklein and Stacey Bohlert, who held
up through sprained ankles and bloody lips to lead Binghamton to
conquer Kutztown defense. Defender, Becky Habib, made a tremendous
block, stopping a sure goal. Captain, Ally Gilli, kept the intensity
up with her full field sprints and fast goals. Midfielder, Jen Bernard,
has yet to drop a ball and was a MVP throughout the game. If there
was overtime this would be a sure win for Binghamton, but they were
proud of their team’s performance and final 6-6 score. Go
Bearcats!

| The Outdoors Club did

was had by all. Friday, mid-morning, we hit the trail. As we hiked
to the trailhead we decided to try our orienterring skills and broceeded
to bushwack. Using landscape awareness, compass and map we navigate
over hill and through lake. Our initial intention was to find a lean-to
which we inteded to stleep in. Circumstance and the subconscious will
to test our survival skills dictated other wise. With about two hours
of daylight left, we proceeded to build a snow shelter and get a fire
going. With our home complete and our bellies full from a phenominal
campfire dinner, we laid back and soaked in the serenity. Mmm... no
TV's, no street lights, no time and no place to be... We had a well
deserved 10 hour sleep and awoke with a great sense of accomplishment.

|
| The Bearcats had their
final and most important event of the year this past weekend in Feasterville,
PA. The B team entered the tournament slumping after an extraordinary
start to the season. Unfortunately, their slump continued into the
Regional tournament and they were sent home after losing all three
of their pool games. The A team lost both of their first games and
faced elimination against division rival Pittsburgh in the third and
final pool game of the weekend. However, the Bearcats came out hard
and won big, earning a position in the single elimination playoff
tournament. The team came out and battled hard against RIT, however
fell to the very talented team 4-1. The team was very happy with its
effort, and RIT eventually went on to win the league championship
the very next day. Overall, the season was definitely a success as
both squads had winning records and both advanced to Regionals. The
Bearcats will work hard in the offseason and hope to experience even
more success next year. |

format with one round of pools, followed by a round of direct elimination
15 touch bouts, with fencers fencing off for first, second, third

Ice Hockey vs SUNY Cortland
|
@ Chenango Ice Rink, 7:30pm
|
| On Friday February 23
the Bearcats would face off against their toughest Suny rival the
Cortland Red Dragons. The Bearcats came out firing launching several
shots on net to open the game. Finally, Gus Herold would blast a backhand
right through the goalie’s legs off a great pass from Bryan
Cloke. The second period was a complete reversal of the first with
Cortland firing back scoring three unanswered goal’s. Senior
goalie Adam Leach would stand on his hand making one acrobatic save
after another. This would allow the Bearcats to stay in the game long
enough to begin to mount there comeback. With twelve minutes left
to go in the third period Doug Centola would steal the puck and skate
around three Cortland players before launching a Slap Shot top corner.
Immediately following that Goal Bill Woerner would put score a goal
to tie the game at 3 a piece. However, the Bearcats would lose steam
and watch Cortland put in three unanswered goals to put the game away.
With time running down though Jake Agoos would put in a beautiful
goal to make the final score 6-4. |

Roller Hockey ECRHA Tournament
. |
@ Williamsport, PA
|
| The Bearcats had their
final regular season event in Williamsport, PA this past weekend and
ended their season just as they had planed, with both the A and the
B team advancing to the Regional Tournament. The weekend started slowly
for the A team, with a tough loss to Buffalo 7-5. This put the Bearcats
in a position where they had to win their next two games in order
to qualify for Regionals. Fortunately, the Binghamton A squad played
some of their best hockey of the season, defeating both Maryland and
Delaware. The team finished the regular season with a final record
of 8-7-1. Unfortunately, the B team did not have as much success in
Williamsport. They lost all four games, however three of those games
were decided by only one goal. The B team finished the regular season
with a record of 8-6-2, and all of the Bearcats roller hockey players
are excited to practice hard this week to get ready for Regionals.

The Bearcats took on Saint Bonaventure in what would
be the last home game of the season. The Bearcats came out fired
up and took a 3-1 lead early on goals from Doug Centola and Tommy
Kittay. The third goal was scored by Aaron Woolf on an powerful
one time slap shot off a pass from Judson Dacher-Shapiro. Despite
the comfortable lead the Bearcats would take a series of penalties,
which allowed Saint Bonaventure to score four unanswered goals to
take over the lead. BU would battle back lead by the efforts of
Bill Woerner who would score two goals, and Bryan Coughlin plus
Dan Gross who were defensive anchors with the other defensemen in
the penalty box. BU would however lose on a late goal with the final
score being 6-5. The Bearcats would close the season with a final
record of 10-10 and would like to thank graduating seniors Bryan
Cloke, Adam Leach, Bryan Coughlin, Dan Gross, and Aaron Woolf for
their four years of great play, and wish them luck in all their

always a lot of fun with skiers dressing up in costume, such as penguins
and Quail Man. The snow was coming down as the team competed

female team came in 8th out of 11 teams on Saturday's GS race.
That is the highest finish this season. The team looks forward

Levering made it into the Blue bracket of Men’s 1’s.
Kevin Bojko finished in 3rd place of Men’s 2’s Red Division.
The rest of the team struggled against the intense competition.
Key absences left the team’s less experienced players playing

the first goal of the game after a tough penalty to Lon Jones. However,
the Bearcats battled back scoring four answered goals with two scored
by Bill Woerner, and the rest coming from Judson Dacher-Shapiro and
Bryan Coughlin. During the second period the BCC hornets regained
the momentum by quickly tallying two goals to open the second period.
However the Bearcats rallied back thanks largely the scoring tandem
of Doug Centola and rookie Pete Hillinger who had a goal and two assists
respectively. Finally to close the game Bryan Coughlin launched a
booming slap shot top cheese to record his first multi goal game of

The Binghamton women's

goal of the game came from senior Ali Arnone with a perfect shot on
the

of the
second half, senior Margaret Sinclair scored the second goal after
a great
pass from senior Amanda Chuisano, pushing the Bearcats into the lead.
Sophomore goalie Jessica Levine kept the Bearcats in the game with
several
key saves throughout the game. The defense also did a superb
job
maintaining the intensity of the game to ensure a win. It was
a great
victory accomplished through teamwork and communication. Great

Ice Hockey vs Ithaca
|
@ Chenango Ice Rink, 7:30pm
|
| The Bearcats started the
second semester off in a home matchup against Ithaca College. BU
looked to continue its winning streak against Ithaca, having beaten
them in both of their first semester meetings. The game started
off quickly in the Bearcats' favor, with the home team capitlizing
on some early power plays with goals from Tom Ktay (who finished the
game with two goals) and Bill Woerner. By the end of the first
period the score was 5-0 in Binghamton's favor with Judson Dacher-Shapiro
and Doug Centola adding two goals each. The second period brought
a decrease in scoring and a big increase in penalties. The game
got rough midway through the second and would stay that way for the
rest of the game. Ithaca produced a few more shots in the second
and managed to slip only two past him. Although Ithaca looked
to gain momentum towards the end of the period, Binghamton's skill
and speed proved too much for their rivals and the Bearca ts successfully
smothered any further opportunities in the third period. The
game ended 8-3 with Adam Leach making 24 saves and Bu firing 40 shots
at the fatigued Ithaca goalie. |

Roller Hockey ECRHA Event - All Star Weekend
|
@ Philadelphia, PA
|
The Binghamton University
Roller Hockey Club attended their first tournament of the spring semester
this past weekend in Feasterville, Pennsylvania. The ECRHA (Eastern
Collegiate Roller Hockey Association) event, All-Star Weekend, consisted
of a few very important regular season games for both the Bearcats'
A & B teams, as well as some special all-star festivties.
The Bearcats A team, playing in Division
I, started the weekend off with a matchup against the unbeaten Rhode
Island Rams. The Bearcats held their own against the speedy
Rams, but eventually fell 6-4 in a tough loss. The Bearcats
looked then faced the University of Michigan Wolverines, visiting
the ECRHA from the MCRHL (Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League).
The Wolverines defensive style of play stymied the Bearcats offensive
attack and the Wolverines blanked the Bearcats 4-0. The Bearcats
then fell to the University of Connecticut Huskies, 5-2, before rebounding
in stellar fashion by dominating the Boston University Terriers 9-3.
The Bearcats A team is now 6-6-1 and currently holds 2nd place in
the Division I Central Conference. Notable performers were Mike
Coyle, who netted 5 powerplay goals, and goaltender Adam Leach, who
kept the Bearcats in some very tightly contested games.
The nationally ranked Bearcats B Team started the
weekend with two exhibition games, one against the Divison I Maryland
Terrapins and the other against the B Team of the University of Michigan.
The first contest ended on a very controversial call by one of the
referees and the Bearcats lost a heartbreaker, 5-4. The University
of Michigan Wolverines had their hands full with the Bearcats balanced
offensive attack, but managed to outlast Binghamton, 7-4. The
two losses did not shake the confidence of the Bearcats B Team as
they rebounded with a strong 6-3 victory over the Drexel Dragons.
The Bearcats last game of the weekend was against rival the Towson
University Tigers. The Bearcats played an excellent game, but
just came up short, losing 3-2. The B team is now 8-2-1 and
holds 3rd place in the B Division's Northern Conference.
This year was a historic year for the club, as
an unprecedented 7 players were selected to their respective division's
all-star team. John Cahill, Mike Guerriero, Mike Coyle, Sanjay
Raveendranath, David Shapiro, Scott Wagner, and Tom Moore were all
selected to represent Binghamton University in the Division I and
B Division All-Star Games. Tom Moore netted two goals, Mike
Coyle, Scott Wagner, Mike Guerriero both scored once, and Sanjay Raveendranath
chipped in two assists. The Bearcats will be in action again
the last weekend in February as they close out the regular season
in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

which
earned us many points. The team similar success in doubles with
2 of the
3 doubles teams winning their first round match as well. Notable
finishes
in the tournament in clude a good performance by Ryan Levering who
finished in the top 8 players for mens ones. The overall team
was missing
key elements in two players who were unable to attend this tournament.
The final results and points/rankings have yet to be posted at the

Ice Hockey Game at Oswego
|
@Oswego, NY 7pm
|
| BU traveled up to Oswego
State for an night game against the high powered Lakers.
The first period brought some early excitement, with freshman Peter
Hilliger scoring a hat-trick in the first period, including an exciting
short-handed goal where he picked an Oswego defender's pocket in the
offensive zone and turned up the ice to beat the goalie on a clean
breakaway. Unfortunately Oswego proved to be too much for the
Bearcats in the first and opened the floodgates with 5 goals.
The second period was a high intensity, heavy hitting period with
both teams going up and down the ice with great scoring chances and
some phenomenal saves by BU goalie Colin Rosenbaum. Even with
the outstanding effort, BU could not stop the Oswego power play, which
added three more goals. Although the Bearcats looked to be down
and out with under ten minutes to go in the third period, they never
gave up. Doug Centola added a goal with about 8 minutes to go
to make the score 8-4, adding new life to Binghamton's game.
With under three minutes to go, Binghamton went on a scoring frenzy
scoring three goals within 2 minutes; one from Judson Dacher-Shapiro
and two more from Centola. The last minute brought great excitement
with BU getting multiple scoring chances, but they were unable to
capitalize on any with the game ending 8-7. Although the outcome
was not what Binghamton wanted, they showed a great amount of grit
and hard work with the late game comeback. |

you can't climb above 10 feet. If you are harnessed, you can climb
to the top of the 50 ft wall. In order to be harnessed, the person
must have an accomplice that is belay certified. This basically means
that the person is capable of keeping the person climbing safe. Obviously,
there is risk involved, but with precaution and advice from experienced
climbers, this is a safe venture. |
